Guest guest
Hello Star Folks, The question of verifying whether the F/B ayanamsha is the best value can be addressed by a technique that is used in Vedic astrology especially, but should also be applied in the framework of the western sidereal school according to my experience. This is the method of vargas, or what we call harmonic charts in the west. (Not all Vedic vargas are calculated in the same way, so this comparison is only partly true.) In order to calculate a harmonic chart, you multiply the absolute longitude of the point by the harmonic number and then reduce the result so that it is less than 360*. For example, a point at 4* Taurus = 34*, so to get the longitude of the 9th harmonic (the important Vedic Navamsha chart) you multiply by 9 giving 306* or 6* Aquarius. Most computer software these days will do these charts for you, or list a series of positions. Why bother with these exotic charts? Here is an example. My natal sun is at 22Lib17'28 " using the F/B SVP, so in the 12th harmonic the longitude is 27Sag29'39 " (according to Astrodienst calculations). My father's moon is at 22Ari13'15 " giving a 12th H of 26Sag39'06 " . (All points that are a multiple of 30* apart will be in conjunction in the 12th H because 360/12 = 30.) Now for the interesting part...My older brother's natal sun is at 27Sag09'44 " , while my step-mother's sun is at 26Sag22'01 " . As you can see, all these positions are in close conjunction, almost within 1*! If the Lahiri ayanamsha is used, these postions will differ by the 12th multiple of SVP-Lahiri, so that the sun/moon conjunction between my chart and my father's is in 7-8 Cap, not even close to the other natal suns. As for tropical positions, don't ask! In my small sample of charts for friends and family that I worked on back in the 80's, here are some other powerful contacts (all are conjunctions within one degree, the only aspect that I would look at with this technique): an astrologer and diviner had her 9th UR 0 natal ME; a numerologist, 12th ME 0 natal ME; cosmetologist, 9th MO 0 natal VE; mother 12th MO 0 daughter natal SU; two girlfriends, one had 9th MO 0 the others 12th VE, which I wouldn't usually consider, except that both were 0 my unrectified and apparently accurate natal ASC, fun and trauma; sister-in-law 12th MO 0 my natal MO; niece's 9th MO 0 my natal SU; dancer 9th NE 0 natal ME. None of these contacts would be made in either the Lahiri or tropical zodiac, and in fact if we accumulate enough good data it may be possible to objectively refine the SVP slightly, but according to my small sample it is already quite close to a best fit. If these results intrigue you, do some 9th and 12th harmonic charts for your friends, family or clients and post the findings here. I think the F/B fiducial may yet be a real winner for us. The leading choices (Fagan-Bradley and Lahiri) are less than one degree apart. I don't know of any other choice that has as many adherents as these two. Fagan-Bradley fixes Spica at 29Vir06'05 " , while Lahiri fixes it at 00Lib00. The Tropical Zodiac is roughly 24 or 25 degrees " off " from the Sidereal. > > Despite the choices of ayanamsas and interpretation techniques, all > Siderealists do agree on one thing: the stars, and not the equinox points, are the " landmarks " for measuring Zodiacal longitude. > > Later, > Kevin > > >
