Hi Lori,

I thought I remembered that we talked about this on the list a short time

ago, but I did a search and couldn't find the posts. So I'll write a brief

summary here.

(1) Both western sidereal astrology and Jyotish use the sidereal zodiac.

But the western siderealists use the Fagan-Brandley ayanamsa while Jyotish

generally uses the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Lahiri positions of the planets are

53 minutes further along in the zodiac than the F-B positions.

The sidereal system uses the Aldebaran-Antares axis as the stars marking

the zodiac. Jyotish generally uses Spica as the point between Virgo and

Libra. There are a few other zodiacs used in India, such as Raman's but the

most popular is Lahiri. This zodiac was certified by the Indian government

after a lot of research.

(2) The sidereal system mostly pays attention to the planets and how close

to the angles they are. Astrologers don't pay so much attention to signs

and houses, but they place a lot of emphasis on close aspects between planets.

Jyotish interpretation is a lot like Tropical interpretation in that the

houses and house rulers are important along with the planets, signs and

aspects. Jyotish has many combinations called " yogas, " that is, special

combinations of planets in aspect to each other that have very specific

meanings.

(3) When siderealists do use houses, they use the Campanus system. Jyotish

uses whole sign houses along with one of two other systems: Sripati and

Indian Equal house. In Jyotish the cusps are always the centers of the houses.

(4) Indian astrologers may extensively use the navamsa or 9th harmonic

chart, which they combine with the natal chart for specific interpretations.

Maybe a siderealist on this list can add some information about the western

sidereal system. I can answer any further questions you might have on Jyotish.

Sincerely,

Therese
