Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh, is

considered one of the most sacred days to start anything auspicious.

This year Akshaya Tritiya is on 08-05-08

The following are some of important events-------

Akshaya Tritiya is the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth

incarnation of Vishnu.

On this day, Shri Veda Vyasa began the composition of the

Mahabharata.

In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas received the Akshaya Pathra (bowl)

from Lord Krishna on this day.

Ganga Devi or Mother Ganges also descended to earth on this day.

It is on the akshaya tritiya day that Lord Brahma started his work

of creation

ASTROLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

As the Sun, the lord of the planets and the Moon the lord of

creativity (sense) are exalted, the day is considered to be an

auspicious day in India. If the tritiya day falls on a Wednesday or

Friday when moon is in Rohini or 4th constellation, the day becomes

especially sacred. It is believed that the sun and the moon are most

radiant and best placed on the Askhaya Tritiya day; they are

simultaneously at their peak of brightness, which happens only once

every year.

Religious Significance

Hindus believe in the theory of " mahurats " or auspicious timings in

every step in life

Akshaya Tritiya is one such momentous occasion, which is considered

one of the most auspicious days of the Vedic Calendar. It is

believed, any meaningful activity started on this day would be

fruitful. There is no need to select a `mahurat' on this day as the

entire day is devoid of malefic influences. Large number of

marriages and several new beginnings take place on this day.

According to the Dharamashastras, this day is considered sacred for

Vishnu Puja and for donating items, such as umbrellas, fans or

sandals to the Brahmins. Some Vedic scholars even say that on this

day.

It has been a ritual since years that people do some good deeds on

this day such as donating food in temples, forgiving and forgetting

the past to renew relationships, resolving to leave bad habits and

practicing good habits in life etc. This is the actual significance

behind celebrating this festival beside other scientific, religious,

astrological significances which ultimately works for the betterment

of an individual as well as a society.

Whoever worships lord Krishna and applies chandan all over lord

Krishna, idols and also Brindavana of GURUS of Madhva sects. Any

japa, homa, pitru tarpana, or dhana done that day becomes akshaya

means he earns lots of good karma that day--PUNYA. This day is

especially important as on this day any thing you donate is akshaya

or never ending. It is widely celebrated in all parts of India by

different sections of the society irrespective of their religious

faith and social grouping.

The Golden Day

The word " Akshaya " means imperishable or eternal - that which never

diminishes. Initiations made or valuables bought on this day are

considered to bring success or good fortune. Buying gold is a

popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, as it is the ultimate symbol of

wealth and prosperity. Gold and gold jewelry bought and worn on this

day signify never diminishing good fortune
