This year Akshaya Tritiya is on 08-05-08 The following are some of important events------- Akshaya Tritiya is the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. On this day, Shri Veda Vyasa began the composition of the Mahabharata. In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas received the Akshaya Pathra (bowl) from Lord Krishna on this day. Ganga Devi or Mother Ganges also descended to earth on this day. It is on the akshaya tritiya day that Lord Brahma started his work of creation ASTROLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE As the Sun, the lord of the planets and the Moon the lord of creativity (sense) are exalted, the day is considered to be an auspicious day in India. If the tritiya day falls on a Wednesday or Friday when moon is in Rohini or 4th constellation, the day becomes especially sacred. It is believed that the sun and the moon are most radiant and best placed on the Askhaya Tritiya day; they are simultaneously at their peak of brightness, which happens only once every year. Religious Significance Hindus believe in the theory of " mahurats " or auspicious timings in every step in life Akshaya Tritiya is one such momentous occasion, which is considered one of the most auspicious days of the Vedic Calendar. It is believed, any meaningful activity started on this day would be fruitful. There is no need to select a `mahurat' on this day as the entire day is devoid of malefic influences. Large number of marriages and several new beginnings take place on this day. According to the Dharamashastras, this day is considered sacred for Vishnu Puja and for donating items, such as umbrellas, fans or sandals to the Brahmins. Some Vedic scholars even say that on this day. It has been a ritual since years that people do some good deeds on this day such as donating food in temples, forgiving and forgetting the past to renew relationships, resolving to leave bad habits and practicing good habits in life etc. This is the actual significance behind celebrating this festival beside other scientific, religious, astrological significances which ultimately works for the betterment of an individual as well as a society. Whoever worships lord Krishna and applies chandan all over lord Krishna, idols and also Brindavana of GURUS of Madhva sects. Any japa, homa, pitru tarpana, or dhana done that day becomes akshaya means he earns lots of good karma that day--PUNYA. This day is especially important as on this day any thing you donate is akshaya or never ending. It is widely celebrated in all parts of India by different sections of the society irrespective of their religious faith and social grouping. The Golden Day The word " Akshaya " means imperishable or eternal - that which never diminishes. Initiations made or valuables bought on this day are considered to bring success or good fortune. Buying gold is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, as it is the ultimate symbol of wealth and prosperity.
