Guest guest
Siderealists, I'm not going to be around until this evening, so I'll post this one note this morning. The 28 mansions of the Moon had no specific boundaries. They were simply stars and asterisms that the Moon passed in its journey across the sky. The concept of there being 28 equal divisions (mansions) is (I believe) an Arabic invention--meaning that's the first time they appeared in any kind of written form. These equal divisions were elaborated upon by 20th century authors. In India these 28 mansions were changed to 27 and artifically made to correlate with the solar zodiac. All of this is in Ebenezer Burgess' translation of SURYA SIDDHANTA. The actual stars in the mansions fit much better into a 27 equal scheme rather than a scheme of 28 *equal* parts, which is probably why India made the change. The 30 degree equal sign solar zodiac as we know it originated in Mesopotamia. (At least the current incarnation of a 12 sign zodiac originated then...) It developed from the 17 consellations that used normal stars as markers. Fagan made the mistake of trying to equate the old lunar mansions (which had no boudaries) with the later solar zodiac of 12 equal signs.
