I wanted to objectively respond to attacks on astrology and keep it brief

choosing what seemed to me to be substantive. Interestingly all those who attack

have also admitted to postive experience with predictions. Either they were

morons to start with to think that " Sitting at the edge of tree and cutting the

base will cause you harm " is a prediction. Or they are morons now to not justify

their experience through scientific framework of thinking. As intelligence is a

prarabda / genetic factor, I leave the conclusion to the reader.

1) One " scholar " remarks that there is no reference to predictions in vedas and

purnas. This is far from truth because puranas do carry predictions. e.g. Garga

Muni at the birth of Lord Krishna in Bhagatham. Parashara is the author of

Vishnu Purana and also astrological treatises. His son Veda Vyas is the compiler

of Upanishads etc. Some may question the historicity of these and if they start

a separate thread, we can discuss their " evidences " .

2) The same " scholar " " claims that he has had 50% success rate in predictions, a

dismal performance. I dont know what he tried to predict but given innumerable

possibilities that life offers, I dont know why 50% is a dismal performance. For

example, one astrologer predicted my wife's exact name before I got married. And

I cant believe that it is very probable given the number of common names. Even

in medicine, diagnosis depends on the quality of the doctor. I have given the

same medical report to two doctors and they have come out with two different

diagnosis and cure. If this is true of a branch of knowledge that attracts the

best of talent and investment, how do we expect it to be much better in

astrology? We need good sadhakas, wise and intelligent, willing to dedicate time

to the study and practice of truth and predcitions for us to come up with a

reasonable measure of effectiveness.

3) Another author says that though some predictions come true, they have social

implications such as in the case of difficulties in getting a girl of moola

nakshatra married off. Here, we are taking up popular notions rohini bad for

uncle, moola bad for father-in-law etc. We need to take a non-fanatical and

holistic view.
