Dear John,You have given some interesting information about Mayan Calender. In India too we have two calenders. One is Lunar and the other is Solar. As the Lunar month is shorter than the Solar month, every two or three years one month is added to the Lunar month to create the balance. This month is called an Adhik Maas. Adhik= Additional , Maas = Month. The Adhik Maas is added when the Amvasya (new moon) and the Surya Sankranti (Change in Sun's sign) fall on same day. For example, on coming 14th April 2010, it is Amvasya and also the Sun is changing its sign from Pisces to Aries. So, there is an Adhik Maas this year. This is the ongoing month of Vaishakh which comes after the month of Chaitra. Vaishakh began on 30th of March 2010 and will end on 30th of May 2010 lasting for two months instead of the usual one month. According to a popular superstition no holy work, marriage or

house warming is done during Adhik Maas. People forget that it is only a process of balancing of calenders and nothing else.It is due to this balancing of Lunar and Solar calenders that we have festivals falling in set times of the year every year. Diwali comes in October end or November beginning, Holi is in March, Rakshabandhan is in August, and so on. These festivals are based on the Lunar Calender. On the other hand, the Hijri Calender, a Lunar calender, on which the Islamic festivals are based does not have any system of balancing the Lunar and Solar calenders. This is why the Islamic festivals do not correspond with the annual seasons or the months of a Solar year.Interesting. ......Regards,AshutoshJohn wrote:> It is now well known that the Mayans used the cycle of Venus to construct their calendar. The Venus annual count is 260 days (13 months with 20 days each)

which are shorter than the usual 365 days in a solar year. However, they have compensated for this by making a Long Count Calendar which added adjustment days to fit the solar year. Thus, they ended with using two calendar wheels to keep track of their time.>> In the vedic tradition, Venus is considered the teacher of the asuras. One wonders if this was the reason why the Mayans, in spite of their astronomical advancements, practiced human sacrifices to appease their gods.>> JR>>>>>>>>>>>> ------------ --------- --------- ------>> MARRIAGE IS THE BEST AND TOUGHEST PARTNERSHIP ONE CAN HAVE
