Friends,

We are all very fortunate to have generous friends like Shri Vijay Arora ( an

old time forum member from New Jersey) who has shared with me some LalKitab

related notes from his father ( The late, Shri Maharaj Arora who had the

privilege of being close to Pt. Rup Chand jee.) While sifting through his

father's papers, Sh. Arora found a note that had been dictated by Pt. Rup Chand

jee. Both Mr. Arora and I had some difficulty reading the handwritten Urdu so we

had Sh. Raj Pal Verma (another member of our forum from New York) decipher the

writing for us.

Pt Jee has suggested that the following three things MUST be given to a bride

in dowry or as a gift at the time of marriage:

1. A palang (bed) for the use of the newly married ( " palang - vaaste aulaad

ke " )

2. " paraat - daulat, ann paanee ke liye " (paraat is a utensil used for

kneading wheat)

3. " gaagar, peetal kee jis kaa moonh ghade jaisa ho, us mein paanee, yaa kucch

aur Daal kar rakhen, lekin daal naheen. " A brass pitcher, not to be kept empty.

Can be partially filled with water or, something else (example: a handful of

rice) but not to be filled with lentils of any kind.

The fourth precaution:

A strainer (chhalanee, colander) MUST NOT be given in dowry or as a gift to

the bride (thanks, Yograj jee)

These general remedies should be suggested to all the brides.

Vijay jee, thanks again for sharing.

Respectfully,

Rajinder Bhatia
