Separating Chaff and Grain

- Written by Sreenadh OG

Many individuals with average awareness of ancient indian literature and knowledge argue that â€"

1) Nirayana astrology having sign names Mesha, Vrishabha etc was imported from Babylonia, via Greece to India after 3rd century BC after Alexander’s invasion to North-West India.

2) Vedic Tropical astrology neither uses Signs nor supports predictive astrology.

These arguments are the result of clear ignorance â€" since the history of Indian astrology goes back beyond BC 1400 Parasara and BC 1100 Garga (and not simply limited to BC 300). Ancient Indian scholars consider even this Parasara only as a modern day scholar compared to the sages like Skanda, Daksha, Sounaka, Kausika etc and the texts ascribed to them. Any way, since Nirayana astrology is non-vedic in nature, the knowledge tradition and history it preserve should not be of much concern to such false Vedic fanatics (such as AKK).

The second argument deserves attention, even by the Vedic scholars and should be dealt ‘to the point’, so as to dismiss the ignorance. The following facts should be noted â€"

1) Atharva Veda states that, “One born in Moola Nakshatra might cause destruction of Kula and one born in Jyeshta Nakshatra may cause death of eldersâ€. This points to the fact that, Atharva Veda supports predictive astrology.

2) The above point again gets confirmed from the fact that texts like Atharva Parisishta, Atharva Vedanga Jyotisha, Atharva Vedeeya Jyotisha, Atharvana Jyotisha all deals with Predictive astrology of Vedic origin.

3) In Chandogya Upanishad, in a conversation between Narada and Sanat Kumara, Sage Narada lists all the subject branches he is aware of. We find both Nakshatra Vidya (Stellar Astrology) and Rasi Vidya (Sign based astrology) in this list.

Thus there is ample data to prove that even Vedic tropicalists â€"

· Believed and used predictive astrology.

· Used a fixed stellar zodiac (Nakshatra chakra) apart form the moving tropical zodiac wheel having 4 cardinal points (viz. equinoxes and solstices)

· Adopted and started using Rasi Chakra (Wheel of Signs) even as earilest athe period of Chandogya Upanishad, Valmiki Ramayana, Narada Samhita etc and the profession of astrologer as ‘Daivajna’ (One who know about destiny) was known.

Some net frauds like AKK, who project themselves, at the outset as orthodox vedic tropicalists, but join hands with western tropicalists, atheists and missionaries in an effort to degrade and destroy even the feeble proofs and data available regarding the ancient truth of predictive tropical vedic astrology, discard even the quotes referring to Signs, Mars, Rahu, Exaltation, Debilitation etc available even in ancient epic Ramayana. People like AKK are on a missionary effort â€" discarding facts, clues and intuitive vision. They lack even the basic holistic approach, even while looking at the ancient holistic branches of knowledge. Instead this kind of destructive hyenas â€" are trying to look at the ancient Indian holistic knowledge using the ‘scientific’ spectacles, even without understanding what is science, scientific method, and where it is applicable and where not!

Let me refer to an interesting subject of controversy â€"‘the horoscope of Rama as given in Valmiki Ramayana’. It is well known that the planetary position at the time of Rama’s birth is given in Valmiki Ramayana and also that the same quote refers to signs as well. In an effort to deny such basic proof, some people argue that â€"

1) These are interpolated quotes and may not have been present in the original Valmiki Ramayana

2) Valmiki was ignorant and his astronomical knowledge was very limited etc

Out of the above two, the first argument hits dust, when it is shown that even AD 4th century Kalidasa (author of Raghuvamsa) refers to the exaltation of 5 planets at the time of birth of King Dileepa’s son King Raghu. This is important. Kalidasa was one of the oldest datable authentic poets. This quote from Raghuvamsa proves that even 4th century Kalidasa was aware of (and was possibly well-versed in) astrology. He knew that the exaltation of 5 planets indicate the birth of a King or Emperor. It is the same or similar combination which Valmiki also refers to in Valmiki Ramayana. The quote provided by Kalidasa in Raghuvamsa and the quote present in Valmiki Ramayana proves that the adoption of signs by tropical Vedic astrologists happened much before 4th century AD. The quote present in Raghuvamsa is as follows â€"

GrahastataH panchabhiruccha samsrayairasuryagaiH suchita bhagyasampadam

Asuta putram samaye sacheesama trisadhanasaktirivarthamakshayam

(Raghuvamsam)

Please note the statement - “GrahastataH panchabhiruccha samsrayaH†(while 5 planets where in exaltation) â€" about the planetary position at the time of King Raghu’s birth.

This Raghuvamsa quote and the Valmiki Ramayana quote that gives the planetary position at the time of Rama’s birth, not only proves that use of Rasi Chakra (Wheel of Signs) by Vedic tropical astronomers and astrologers dates back to a period much prior to AD 4th century (i.e. before the period of the Poor Aryabhata and Mihira â€" the scholars much cursed by the fool AKK as charlatans etc), but also that Mars, Rahu etc was known as used by Daivajnas (Predictive astrologers) during that ancient past. If you have doubt, refer to the following statement Dasaradha makes while talking to Rama â€"

Apashtabdham cha me rama nakshatra daruna grahaiH

Avedayanti daivajnaH suryangaraka rahubhiH

(Valmiki Ramayana)

[Dear Rama, the Nakshatra is influenced by the malefic planets such as Sun, Mars and Rahu. If this happens then the learned astrologers predict bad results]

This quote note only proves that professional astrologers lived during the period of Valmiki Ramayana, but also proves that that the placement of the malefic planets, Sun, Mars and Rahu in the same Nakshatra was considered inauspicious by the Tropical Vedic astrologers lived during Ramayana period.

Those who are interested can probe further.

Tail Piece:

AKK: Astrology came from Greece to India and the charlatans like Aryabhata and Mihira popularized it.

Dr. B.V. Raman: Some of the modern astronomers assert with ill-founded reason that the Hindus borrowed their astronomy from the Greeks, those ignorant geniuses in astronomy who said that the Sun was a red-hot iron ball suspended in the heavens between the Peloponnesian and some other mountains. We can excuse ignorance. We cannot show sympathy for willful perversion of ‘Intellect’. There crude notions of the age of 8 or 9 thousands years for the earth in its present form may have been swallowed easily by the biblical writers whose knowledge of science was primitive, but they cannot stand the criticism in the light of Hindu knowledge or modern scientific researches.
