Guest guest
NASA: No Urgent Problems With Atlantis Jun 9, 5:28 PM (ET) By SETH BORENSTEIN CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - With a 4-inch gap in the space shuttle Atlantis' heat-protecting blanket not appearing to be an urgent problem on Saturday, the crew readied themselves for what NASA called a delicate ballet with the international space station. Then the shuttle will enter a weeklong embrace Sunday with the orbital outpost. Atlantis' seven astronauts spent much of Saturday on a mandatory inspection of the shuttle's delicate heat tiles, outer edges and blankets for problems similar to the kind that caused the fatal Columbia accident in 2003. As of Saturday afternoon, no glaring problems were reported. Guest guest
Major computer problem looms over space station Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:33AM EDT By Bruce Nichols HOUSTON (Reuters) - A major, new problem popped up on the International Space Station on Wednesday as space shuttle astronauts finished installing a new solar-power unit -- the failure of key computers that could in an extreme scenario force the crew off the station, officials said. " That's not something I'm really concerned about, " ISS program manager Mike Suffredini said of having to leave the station at least temporarily with no crew aboard. But " that's the worst-case scenario, " he told a late night news briefing. The failure occurred in computers on the Russian segment of the 16-nation space station, computers that control navigation and key life-support systems on the huge orbital base. Without them, the station cannot maintain proper orbit and the crew cannot stay on board. The station relies mostly on big gyroscopes to maintain its proper orientation but also uses control jets and navigation systems run by the troubled computers to help. Similar station computer failures have occurred before, NASA officials said, but never affecting all three lines of Russian computers to the point that they could not reboot themselves, as happened Wednesday. The U.S. segment has its own computers but they depend on the Russian ones, officials said. Suffredini said he expects to be able to fix the problem and that there are numerous alternatives short of taking the crew off the station. " I'm not thinking this (is) something we will not recover from, " he said. Engineers were studying whether the new solar power unit is the cause of the problem and whether disconnecting it to reboot the computers would resolve it. Space managers were also considering extending the visit of space shuttle Atlantis to use its attitude-control jets and life support to supplement the station's while engineers work on the problem. Guest guest
Dear David and list members, We can add "breathing" to the list of challenged indications. The impact of mysteriousness is also there due to Rahu's aspect. Best wishes, Thor Space station oxygen, water computers fail Russian computers that control the international space station's orientation and supply of oxygen and water have failed, potentially extending the space shuttle's mission -- or cutting it short. Russian engineers aren't sure why the computers stopped working. A failure of this type has never occurred before on the space station.David Hawthorne <david wrote: dear thor... thank you for this post. it is interesting that the space station is having computer problems, which can be connected with mercury. there are also problem with the heat-protecting blanket around the Atlantis space shuttle. this is like having a skin problem. mercury rules the skin, and it was closely afflicted at the time of the launch and remains so during the mission. best wishes, david hawthorne - cosmologer SAMVA Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2007 6:47 AM Re: Mercury's Transit Major computer problem looms over space stationThu Jun 14, 2007 7:33AM EDT By Bruce NicholsHOUSTON (Reuters) - A major, new problem popped up on the International Space Station on Wednesday as space shuttle astronauts finished installing a new solar-power unit -- the failure of key computers that could in an extreme scenario force the crew off the station, officials said. "That's not something I'm really concerned about," ISS program manager Mike Suffredini said of having to leave the station at least temporarily with no crew aboard. But "that's the worst-case scenario," he told a late night news briefing. "I'm not thinking this (is) something we will not recover from," he said. Engineers were studying whether the new solar power unit is the cause of the problem and whether disconnecting it to reboot the computers would resolve it. Space managers were also considering extending the visit of space shuttle Atlantis to use its attitude-control jets and life support to supplement the station's while engineers work on the problem.SAMVA , "cosmologer" <cosmologer wrote:>> NASA: No Urgent Problems With Atlantis> Jun 9, 5:28 PM (ET) By SETH BORENSTEIN> > CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Guest guest
Dear friends, has advised that " Mercury is going to be in continued trouble upto third week of July. " Earlier David Hawthorne has advised that the affliction of Mercury could be difficult for the indications of Mercury, which include communications and transportation. The following story is interesting in this regard. Best wishes, Thor Atlantis crew awaits final inspection results POSTED: 1916 GMT (0316 HKT), June 20, 2007 Story Highlights • Atlantis crew awaits results of final heat shield inspection • Crew successfully tests shuttle's flight control system • Atlantis scheduled to land Thursday at Cape Canaveral, Florida • Showers forecasted at landing site on Thursday and Friday HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Space shuttle Atlantis headed for Earth on Wednesday as its crew awaited the results of a final heat shield inspection. A camera attached to the shuttle's robotic arm surveyed the wings and nose cap after Atlantis undocked from the international space station Tuesday. NASA engineers study those images to make sure the shuttle can withstand the intense heat of re-entering Earth's atmosphere before they give final approval for a Thursday landing at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The inspections became routine after shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry in 2003, killing seven astronauts. The shuttle's flight control system, used to steer Atlantis once it re-enters the atmosphere, checked out fine on Wednesday. During the crew's nearly 10 days at the space station, the astronauts installed a new truss segment, unfurled a new pair of power-generating solar arrays, and activated a rotating joint that allows the new solar arrays to track the sun. The mission was extended to give them time to repair a thermal blanket on the shuttle that peeled back during lift off. Even if the shuttle's heat shield is cleared for landing, the weather might not cooperate on Thursday. A front in the Florida panhandle was expected to send showers to the Kennedy Space Center both Thursday and Friday. " Get us some good weather for Thursday if you can. It doesn't have to be good. It just has to be good enough, " shuttle commander Rick Sturckow told Mission Control. Atlantis has enough fuel to orbit until Sunday, but managers want the shuttle to land by Saturday. The flight would only be extended to Sunday if there were technical problems that needed to be fixed. In a daily report sent up to the astronauts Wednesday morning, Mission Control said landing opportunities at Kennedy, the primary landing site, look slightly better on Friday and Saturday. A backup landing site in California might be considered on Friday. That backup site plus another in New Mexico would be activated Saturday if necessary. Atlantis was only cleared to leave the space station after Russian computers there passed a test Monday to take control of the station's thrusters. The computers had crashed last week but were revived over the weekend. On Atlantis, the astronauts had turned off equipment to conserve fuel in case the shuttle needed to stay longer. (Watch how the cosmonauts fixed the computers Video) More than an hour after the shuttle undocked Tuesday, a piece of debris that looked like a blanket and at least five tiny flashing particles floated past the space station. Engineers were still reviewing video and photographs to identify the debris. " It's not a big concern, " said Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager. The shuttle is bringing back astronaut and former space station resident Sunita Williams, whose more than six months in space set a record for the longest spaceflight by a woman. Astronaut Clay Anderson, her replacement, was taken to the station aboard Atlantis. " I just can't wait to be home, " Williams said Wednesday. NASA said the space station and the space shuttle would be visible Wednesday night from the United States. Cities with the best chances of getting a view were Denver, Detroit, San Francisco and Washington, said NASA spokeswoman Kylie Clem. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. Guest guest
Dear Thor: Thanks for your post today... In the email I originally sent on Mercury's transit, I also mentioned problems with computers. As you know, since then the Russian Space Station had computer problems for a couple of days, almost causing the evacuation of the station, and now, today United Airlines had computer problems, shutting down a majority of the flights scheduled in the major airports in USA. I also mentioned that business could have some problems, and apparently the USA stock exchange fell by 150 points today. Retrograde Mercury is at 16:43 degrees, under the close aspect of Rahu at 15:44 degrees, and this will intensify over the next day or two, as Mercury applies to Rahu.
