Guest guest
Sun is a " satvic " planet. He is a natural malefic. Both statements are right. There is no contradiction if you try to ponder over the issue coolly. It is two different issues i.e. " satvic " and " natural malefic " . So far as Hindu Astrology is concerned, Sun is " satvic " means he represents that signification in Hindu Astrology. Why? He represents " Soul " i.e. he is the Soul of Kalapursha. What is the innate nature of Soul? The natural or the innate nature of Soul is " Satvic " . It is pure. It is uncorrupted. Hence Sun is satvic. His nature is predominantly so. It means the quality of " Satvic " would be predominant in those charts whose nature is Satvic, that is to say, the Sun is free from afflictions or corrupted in those charts. The astrologer is required to understand this condition of purity by studying the position of Sun in a chart. Sun takes the qualities of the rasi where it is placed. His quality of being satvic is modified subject to other factors or forces operating in a chart or on him. Accordingly, the satvic quality of a person changes from one person to another and one chart to another. The simple way to understand the issue is that one should not consider two significations simultaneously in a chart. When you consider the signification satvic or how much a person possesses the satvic quality, you should only keep that signification in mind and examine how it gets connected with those relevant houses and those house lords in a chart. Now you see Sun is in 5th house. When you consider the Sun, for the quality of Satvic, it is a good placement. Now you should forget that he is a natural malefic temporarily. When you consider the influence of Moon on him from 11th house, you should consider this Moon as a natural benefic not as 8th lord. (When Moon is in opposition to Sun means Moon is having full " paksha phal " . It is in Libra. It is a sign of a natural benefic. Further any planet in 11th would do well since it is an upachaya house.) Moon stands for Mind. Both the soul and the mind are in mutual influence in a very good axis. It is the first step of analysis. Well, if you wish to consider the lordships, you are welcome to do that also. The 9th lord Sun is in 5th house. The 8th lord of obstacles is in the 11th house of gains. She influences the Soul, the Sun in the 5th house of Purva Punya. What is the indication of this? The Soul has to face certain obstacles in gaining the Ultimate in the path of Sadhana. One has struggle himself in this process. Why? 11th house is a house of struggle (11th is 6th from 6th.) It is well within the accepted nature of evolution. The Soul has to struggle to overcome the temptations of mind (Moon) and gains the Ultimate (the 8th lord is a moksha lord which stands for yoga sadhana too). In this process the Purva Punyam helps the person. The position of Sun in Aries (sinful surroundings) justifies that, only from the Rasi of Mars, the Sun can exalted i.e. the soul. Now let us take the other signification. The 5th house stands for progeny. A natural malefic like Sun's placement in 5th is not desirable. His placement jeopardizes the " Jeev " properties of 5th. Aries is a fiery Rasi and planet like fiery Sun's placement does not help for the prospects of progeny. When the Moon's lordship is considered as she rules the 8th in the chart, her aspect on the 5th house is not a welcome one. She is imposing the obstacles of 8th for gaining a progeny, from the 11the on the 5th. (11th is a house of disease since it is 6th from 6th) Sage Parashara says the 8th House blemish does not hold good for Moon. But for progeny it holds good to some extent. It may not hold good for the other signification the Satvic. The problem is that Sages never elaborate. The aphorisms are so short and pregnant with specific meanings, the astrologer should use his intellect to understand the real meaning and decide the means of application of a particular rule. Here comes the importance of your own observation of a situation in a number of charts and your experience decides what is the real meaning of a rule. Swamy. PS: This message was written with reference to a beginner's query to me. He posed the question that Sun is a " satvic planet " and is a " natural malefic " how to reconcile this? I made an attempt with my little understating on the subject. Though the issue was not raised in the List, a copy of my reply to him is posted in the list in order to solicit the views of the other members, as the List is silent.
