Virus Information

This is the virus that has come up on my screen 3 times now in last

day. Read below.

My computer completely crashed again two weeks ago. I lost

everything. Including backup files because they too were

corrupted. There seems to be a few very virulent viruses out

there that can easily be transfered to any one computer disguised as

something else. So. if one is downloading a lot of information from

various sites or say receiving information from various people from

the net (and who knows what part of the world or network they are

coming from) or do a lot of research on their computer like I do -

(all these reasons and I am sure many more) easily opens one to be

attacked. It is more than be neglegent. These viruses are often

written in an ad or in an attachment unknowing to the sender and

once you open (or click on) you often now are attacked or being use

to transfer the virus to other areas you visit on the net.

The recent viruses that are circulating know how to replicate

themselves and even though you try everything to get rid of them

they come back and with a vengence. Here is an example: You

purposely or inadvertantly open an ad. Once this ad is downloaded

to your computer it creates itself time and time again even if you

orginally deleted it. Also. the viruses that came on this one ad

now knows the language to corrupt other ads and bring them to your

computer. Know matter that you have scaned you computer or

readjusted your firewall once you've got it - your it.

My computer was so bad a few weeks ago that just turning on my

computer to get to my email program was virualy impossible. My

screen looked liked a 1000 piece animated jigsaw puzzle of ads. The

same one over and over again. It wouldn't let me go any further.

This is what I had to do: I called and verify with my internet

provider the problem. I called my computer technical suport company

(Dell) who help me with the operating mechanics of the computer

along with the written software I have on my computer. I then had

to call and work with my broadband internet provider who handles my

email accts. The Trojan virus that was detrimmed to be the culprit

left me no choice but to rewrite/reprogram over everything on my

computer and reinstall all my operating software. The corruption on

my computer contaminated everybit of information and all my files on

my computer that I had no choice but to clear my whole computer to

get it to work properly. eveything!

I say this with a heavy and sad heart and a warning to others to be

viglilent in frequently scanning you computer for viruses and having

installed a firewall spam and virus prtection software. I did and

thought I was well protected. Since my computer was so severely hit

last Fall I had to get a whole new computer and then in May of this

year my computer got hit again. So I though with all this

protection and firewall and virus program running in the background,

set to automatically search on a regular basis that I had licked the

problem. NO SO.

I have been advised from the security software programs companies,

the virus protection companies and my internet people that it is NOT

enough to have these programs installed on one's computer or just

have them running in the backgroud. One must take the time EVERYDAY

to manuaully run their virus scan and delete all that is

acknowledged and Run everyday your manual check on your firewall and

any other protection you might have. Like Spyseeker. and or

sophisticated Internet virus scans

It takes about 40 minutes to a little over an hour everyday for me

to run these checks over and above what my computer will do

automatically on timed setup or supposedly continuoisly. It is an

inconvenience but well worth it. The advice is that these viruses

are so strong and devious and continuous that constant attention

manually must be done daily.

I hope this info helps others. I hope my computer stays healthy.

It's been a nightmare. It is not fun loosing all of ones data and

having your operational system severely corrupted. These viruses do

have a mind of their own and they easily can get into your computers.

I keep my computer as simple as possible. I do not download any

fancy artwork or photos or displays for the screen or desktop. I

keep it pretty vanilla. Same goes for how I catorise or choose to

keep certain information. I have learned not to download

indiscriminately any information I am interested in. I have also

learned not to store great amounts of research information in my

favorites. If there is information I need I try try to get most of

it off line. If I must (and there is a lot of times this necessary)

I get the information I need and then get off that internet link as

soon as possible then delete or close access to internet. Most

things I do not tap on to when promtpted unless I know exactly what

it is and where it is coming from. I do NOT send anything with an

Attachment Nor do i open anything with an attachment. I do not

click on ads and I do not tap on a link. If I want to see what's in

that link I directly enter its URL into my computer on another

screen. I do not leave my email open for long intervals nor do I

keep my internet open for any one great lenght at a time. I

frequently restart my computer during the day and I completely shut

down when i go to bed at night. Sometimes I will completely shut

down one or more times during the day. This is meant to disrupt any

tracking of my computer from the internet. The computer experts

advise this.

One would think that having all the advantages of a computer could

make our lives more effecient and help us to be better informed and

communicate easier. Unfortunately, as it often happens with new

technology. Our lives are advanced but made more complicated and do

at times leave us more vulnerable.

I have learned to use my computer as a TOOL for information and

limited communication. I have eliminated most groups and other

social communicating open access. I transfer off my computer most

internet information that I want or need. I also have taken to

running on my computer no more than two open windows at a time.

Self contained software/programs are fine. But, anything that

requires me to be on the interenet online is restricted for safety.

Think about this - My main use for my computer is for research. So,

you can imagine how complicated this can be to stay safe. However,

it is a new way of learned behvaior and not assumming that I am

protected just because I have as they say " all my ducks in order " .

I no longer take for granted that using my computer is a free and

safe environment to be in. In fact it is a great tool to reach

around the globe. But the globe is a very big place with a lot of

strangers. It's learned behavior to be safe. Much like locking you

doors at night and nver walking alone when dark.

I've talked with the experts, they have helped me three times now in

10 months to restore my computer operation system even with all the

proctection. I now absolutely follow everything they say to do to

the T and hope it holds me. I am also backing up my files and

getting them off my computer immediately. Nothing gets stored

unless it is essential. My office looks like an office of the past

I have and keep hard paper copies of everything in file cabinets.

And my appts and calendar are in desk books on my desk and not kept

on the computer any longer. Nor do i use the telephone through my

computer for phone conversations.

Last month the first virus was found on Ipod. Mac's too are

starting to be penetrated. The word is viruses are here to stay and

are something that we all are going to have to deal with on a daily

bais as each gets stronger and has a mind of it's own.

The good news is there is better detection by law enforcement

throughout the world to find and go after the hackers with severe

criminal consequences. The bad news is the viruses wheather created

by a 14yr old in his basement here or across the world or an

organized crime syndicated thugs ring to play havoc with computers

for international territory rights and power does little to help us

when it is our computer who gets the virus that once put into

effect ,is now virtually out of control replicating itself and

having its own mind of destruction.

Good Luck - get protected several different ways - runn daily

computer scans manually and stay computer safe.

2-Sharon, > Mark K. 10/3....Re: Viruses?

anyone know about ?

Thanks, Sharon:

Well, let's put out an appeal, to any others who know about viruses?

What did your computer say, you got?

Mine, like I said, is this new imac, and macs in general seem immune

to viruses...

I wonder if there's a way we can protect our list better, too...

take care

sorry, no. Just that I almost downloaded a virus from your list

into my computer. Maybe there's a computer geek out there who knows

more?

Dear Sharon:

Thanks for the message.

Don't know how these messages:

are coming.

I haven't been sending them, they're just appearing in the group

messages.

We do have a lot of new people starting recently.

My Norton Utilities hasn't shown up anything,

and I use a Mac anyway which 99% of the time, never gets

involved in Viruses.

Can you offer any other advice?
