Guest guest
Waning Moon Mercury Retrograde…. 2 Cycles of Rest…. New Moon: Sept. 25th & Mercury Retrograde: TOMORROW, September 24th! One of the most powerful things I learned in my early days of studying Jyotish was in terms of the Moon. As I paid attention to the Moon’s waxing and waning cycles I noticed a dramatic difference between when the Moon was getting bigger and when it was getting smaller. In other words, the Moon affects us in direct proportion to what it is doing! That’s why there’s centuries of lore associated with the Moon! Most people know the old wives tale about the Full Moon! All the animals howl around the Full Moon! Also, all the crazies come out during that time! Unfortunately, I find this simple association very misleading and incomplete. Under close scrutiny one finds that people ‘freak out’ during both extremes of the Moon! In other words, people do kind of freak out when the Moon’s at its peak! However, I also find that people freak out just as much during the New Moon. Perhaps the reason why people don’t commonly make that connection is because the Moon has disappeared and there’s no physical reason to justify the emptiness, the loneliness, or the depression that comes so often near the New Moon. When people freak out around the Full Moon there is that big Moon again to remind us that this may be why! Therefore, it is extremely important to watch how one feels, and even how others, and our whole world’s environment experiences the Moon. Take the recent collapse of the markets on September 15th of 2008. The market collapsed over 500 points and everyone was literally freaking out on this day. When you make an astrology chart for that day you can see that the Moon was recently full the day before. But, this month, Saturn was with the Sun in Leo so Saturn’s influence (delays, losses, grief and suffering) undoubtedly contributed to this phenomena. I’ve noticed over the years that emotions quite often drives the markets. This can easily be understood when you look at the Moon cursing through the sky at different times. Right now, on September 23rd, the Moon is beginning to collapse upon the New Moon! Today, the Moon’s at the 26th degree of Gemini. The Sun, right now is at 7th degree of Virgo. This means the Moon will be colliding with the Sun on Sept 29th. In fact the Sun and Moon will both be at the 12th degree of Virgo at 2am (CST,) on the 29th. This then, will be the New Moon! Therefore, we’re in the Last Quarter of the Moon’s Waning Cycle so you’ll notice the strongest influence of the New Moon during these next 6 days! Watch how you feel during these days and see if you notice an increasing lessening of energy, emptiness, and inwardness. This is because the Moon is having this lessening influence upon all of us because the light of the Sun is diminishing each day. When the Sun is bright and vivid we feel that energy and feel more outward and dynamic. The moment that the clouds cover the sky we feel less energy and more depressed. Studies have shown a direct correlation between the volume of Sun light and happiness and depression in people. Many people in the Northwestern United States can’t stay there because the clouds are so continually overcast. Others in London complain because the weather is always raining and overcast. Studies also show that Winter months of long periods of overcast skys brings much depression. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that the lessening of the light from the Moon also makes us a little crazy. After I had watched the Moon’s cycles for a number of months I noticed not only the repeatable influence of waxing and waning but I began to notice that my body was feeling like resting during the waning times, especially. Then, it occurred to me, perhaps the Moon’s waning cycle is a period of rest, of the general cycles of rest and activity? In Yoga philosophy I had learned about rest and activity. Rest and activity go hand and hand together. So, when we don’t get enough rest then, our activities suffer. This is why Yoga teaches such things as meditation, and increasing one’s rest cycles so that one can get more balanced in one’s life! Like this I noticed that if I surrendered more to the flavor of resting during the waning Moon cycle, I too, began experiencing more restfulness and energy and clarity of mind. If I forgot or couldn’t rest for whatever reason, during the waning Moon cycles I immediately felt rough emotionally and experienced many problems in my daily life. The moment I remembered the Moon, however, and allowed myself to rest more during this time I immediately felt better! Now, I understand that the Moon’s waning cycle is a major rest cycle! And, if one rests more during this part of the cycle one will not only feel better in the present moment, but one will be much more rested and prepared for the dynamic doing and increasing energetic cycle of the up-coming Moon’s waxing cycle! So, pay attention to how you’re feeling right now! If you’re feeling any lack of energy, drive or will, to do things accept that perhaps this is due in part to the Moon’s inward waning Moon time. Give yourself a break! Allow yourself to rest more NOW…. And see if you don’t feel immeasurably better now and weeks to come! Mercury Retrograde Cycle Many people experience, also a lot of negative experiences during typical Mercury Retrograde times too. I’ve noticed that especially a lot of people in accounting and law offices have many difficulties in details and law briefs not being correct during these times. Also, many people report even machines break down or have many difficulties during these times. Mercury every year goes through about 3 Retrograde cycles. Next retrograde time starts on September 24th and ends on October 16th. Mercury Retrograde means the time when the planet Mercury is passing inside the path of the Sun, in relationship to the Earth vs. other times where Mercury is travels on the outer side of the Sun. Like this, other planets sometimes pass beneath the Sun and the Earth and at other times travel around the Sun, as if above the Sun, again, in relationship to the Earth. These times are always described as potentially uncomfortable or negative times. Typical negative Mercury results include mistakes of intellect, lack of clarity of mind, and many, many difficulties in communications. Like the Moon’s waning cycle, I started thinking maybe these Retrograde cycles are a kind of rest cycle. Because, when you pay closer attention to the planets during their retrograde motions; you’ll notice a similar Inwardness going on. Then, I made some experiments and during Mercury’s Retrograde times I tried resting my intellect more! This immediately helped because I also took more times in doing those things that I normally do with my Mercury intellect. So, if I needed to write some letters, communicate with people or pay some bills, I allowed myself more time to do these things. Immediately, I felt better inside and I noticed the normally crazy kind of intellectual time settled down and felt much easier. When you rest during rest cycles you feel remarkably wonderful. If you don’t rest during important rest cycles then you immediately feel worse, and all kinds of fatigue, tiredness, dis-ease and stress result! Pay attention to this upcoming last week of the Moon’s rest cycle, and in a few days, when Mercury stops and begins to go retrograde rest with your Mercury as well!
