What is the meaning of these words Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas (the three qualities born of Nature)? Qualities of each guna is nicely presented in 11 Canto of Bhagavat Maha Purana. In short way: Satva, Rajas and Tamas are three gunas which binds the soul into this material world of maya. Satva is when person is attracted to hapiness (sukha) and knowledge (jnana), when all nine opening in His body are enlighten by knowledge then this person is in Satwa. Rajas means seperation and trsna (hankering). When one mind is full of desires and hankerings this show state of Rajas. Rajas shows also desire for prestige, honour and appreciation. Tamas shows ignornace and dulness, animal world full of instincts. There are elements and placed based on Gunas, temple can be Transcedental or in Satwa, Rajas places are like Trade Centers and all Gemini places (big cities), Tamas is connected to all kinds of places of sins and indulgence. Food which is full of juice and healthy, and prolongs life is Satvic, those which doesnt nurture the body with ojas is tamasic. Rajas is extreme - too spicy, too cold, too hot etc. All these three gunas coresponds to planets and signs.Sy, Ch, Gu are Satwic, Sh/Bu are Rajasic, Ma,Sa,Ra,Ke are Tamasic.
