Dear Ms. Shalini:

Actually there is no shastraic precedents for lighting lemon lamps as a remedy

for afflictions of Rahu as such. However, this practise has been in fact found

to be effective in reality. Of course, lemon fruit has the pride of Place in

mantra shastra where many Mantrik Deities have lemon as the most favourite

offering. Lemon fruit does has the potential of drawing occult energies towards

it, and it is indeed highly auspicious for Durga poojaas.

Regarding the lighting of lemon lamp at home, I remember His Holiness - Shri

la Shri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi - of revered memory who was a living

Sage of our times saying that this should not be done at home. The reason is

not clear; but the Paramaachaarya was unequivocal in saying that this should not

be done at home. You can make the initial preparations at home, but the

lighting of lamp be best done at the temple.

The juice that is squeezed can be disposed off at the root of Tulsi plant,

Aswatha tree of the temple, or on the image of Naagaas (serpent Gods) in the

temple. It is better not to consume the juice yourself. (It is analogous to

the practise when we break coconuts into pieces by throwing it in the ground in

Honour of Lord Ganesha, the person who offers it or persons close to them should

not consume the pieces, but others in the temple can consume it. The difference

is....somehow the lime juice that is squeezed for the lamp is generally not

being offered to anyone, and my feeling is that it is best offered in Honour of

Deities on the ground or as mentioned above - in the roots of Holy Plants, or on

Snake idols).

You can however offer ghee lamp to Goddess Durga at home even if you are

unable to go to the temple. You can chant Durga Sapta Slokhi and offer

salutations to Goddess Durga in your house itself in front of your ghee lamp.

You can also offer whole (uncut) lime fruit as a mark of respect - placing it

beneath the ghee lamp. That lime can be used for making juices. In fact I

always do that during Durga poojas, and have not experienced any untoward thing

with this practise, and can so safely say that this can be done. However,

please do not use it for making lime-rice (i.e. please do not re-heat the lime

or its juice). It is best even to consume the skin of the lemon fully thinking

it is all Divine Prasaad. (anyone will consume tasty things; but it requires

intense devotion to consume even the skin of the lime which may not be entirely

unpalatable with the assumption it is Divine Prasaad. This will eventually give

you the wisdom and maturity to accept the best with the

not-so-best in life and develop the quality of equanimity in you). However, if

you are unable to consume the skin of the lemon, you may dispose it off

respectfully in a place where nobody is likely to trample upon it with their

legs.

To be honest, offering a ghee lamp in the House, holding a lemon fruit in hand

and chanting Durga Sapta Slokhi 7 times, and then placing the lemon fruit as a

humble offering beneath the lamp (assuming the Devi Herself is there - of course

why will she not be there when you are calling Her with devotion!) and offering

21 namaskaarams to Durga Devi at the end of the chant will work even more

powerfully than just lighting lemon lamp in temples.

I hope this post gives you the clarification that you sought from me.

Blessed be.

Pandit R.DAKSHINAMOORTHI.

Respected pandit dakshinamoorthi ji,

It wud b great if U spend some of

your time and clarify my queries related to lighting of lemon lamps

to durga mata during rahu kalam. Can this pooja be done at home?In

north where I live temple closes by 11:00 am and the rahu kaal begins

by 10:50 am (as per local sunrise) … due to shortage of time can I

cut the limes and fill ghee and put wick at home,,, that is do all

preparations at home and just light the lemon lamps at temple or do I

need to cut the lime and squeeze the juice in front of Goddess in the

temple itself.Shud the lime juice be thrown away or can one drink it?

If one is not able to go to the temple for reasons like priest not

allowing such a pooja or temple being closed during afternoon

(Tuesday rahu kalam is in the afternoon 3-4:30 pm) then can a person

conduct this pooja at home?If yes, then where shud the lemons be

disposed after the lamp is burnt? If due to certain unavoidable

circumstances one performs this pooja at home then will it be

effective. Is the effectiveness and results of doing lemon pooja

with devotion at home be same as the same pooja being done in temple?

Pandit ji,it wud be great to hear your views on the lemon pooja for

durga mata during rahu kalam. Thanks in advance.Regards,shalini.
