This, I beleive...

 

I beleive that Jyothish and the religion associated with it (sanaathan dharma)

are about Dharma, which hint at the lines drawn by an individual to himself.

Dharma, in THIS context, loosesly translated as 'sense of inner quality' in

English, is axiomatic, at best. Ethics falls under this broad umbrella; I am

aware that I am painting a broad stroke covering morality, ethics, etc.

 

Dharma is a sense of correctness, rectitude, appropriateness as decided by an

individual unto himself as opposed to commandments/orders/rules/penal codes

handed out by an external source.

 

That is why, the equivalent of (moral) dilemma is 'Dharma Sankat'. Each one

comes out with his own solution based on the poorva samskaarams and the set of

data that he has, as evaluated by his conscience. As shocking as it can be,

conscience can say different things in different people! I used to beleive

otherwise when I was a kid.

 

Also, that is why, we have talks and discourses on Dharma, encouraging one

strongly to look at various hitherto unchartered paths and possibilities but no

hard and fast rules.

 

For example, as a cliche goes, if you tell a lie to protect someone from mafia

hell bent on killing the perhaps innocent former, you break a commandment but

you have acted Dhaarmically. Another example is that, different people take

completely different stance on the issue of capital punishment; they are all

correct simultaneously, Dhaarmically!!

 

To summarise, ethics for Jyothishis is best left to themselves (the

individuals), as unpalatable as it may sound to some/many of us. If you think

someone is unethical (your values clashing with his/hers, say), all you can do

something about is check if some legality has been broken. External agencies can

(and perhaps should) go only that far...
