Guest guest
TOWN PLANNING IN ANCIENT INDIA Town planning is a very complex designing. If one try to give a best town planning, it's very hard. But in old ages of our culture we have great town planning system. Recently archeology department found at dholavira(kucch-gujarat) that they have great town planning. the roads, markets, houses, forts all is according to Vaastushashtra. (Dholavira is a relatively recent discovery. The Archaeological Survey of India has excavated this Indus city since 1989. Habitation at the site began well before 3000 B.C. and continued for more than a millennium. This long history provides important information about the formative stage of the Indus Civilization and its subsequent decline. The city's unique stone architecture is partly responsible for the remarkable preservation of its " Citadel " , " Middle Town " and " Lower Town, " all surrounded by gigantic water reservoirs that were cut into the bedrock. Application is currently being made to UNESCO to register and protect Dholavira as a World Heritage site.) Ref taken from http://pubweb.cc.u- tokai.ac.jp/indus/english/2_4_02.html Vaastushashtra is a very old subject for India and we found the designing according to vaastushashtra in all past eras. The idea of a town with streets containing regular shops on the sides also appears to have been incorporated in Indian cities at a subsequent date. There are basic two concepts first nagar(city) and second is grama(village). City developed by the requirement of socio-political and religion-cultural need. Sometimes a village develops into great town or a simple shrine is seen converted into a temple in city. Natural advantages and easy communications are the main factors for the change in village. A market, a temple, facilities to easy across sand conveyance, especially by water; navigable rivers or seas may be accepted in this context. Streets and their arrangements form is one of the important things in town planning. The ancient people are very much aware of this fact and they are very much careful about street arrangements. The main marga (path) is rajmarga witch is in central generally. The below fact we know from dholavira site which shows that the people of that time believe in vaastushashtra and they know the town planning very well: The city was surrounded by a series of square walls, with a " Citadel " which rises 15 meters above the " Middle Town " and the " Lower Town " . A signboard with ten huge Indus signs found on the floor of a room at the North Gate was probably originally displayed above the gateway. Although the Indus script written on the signboard is still undeciphered, it is likely that the inscription represents the name of the city or the name of a god or a ruler ROHIT JIVANI www.astroprayer.com
