After changing hands between the British and French (14 times), the Brits finally took control of St. Lucia in 1814, and the island gained independence in 1979. Agricultural industries were the mainstay on St. Lucia for decades, but Caribbean tourism made this (simply stunning island) famous. The two towering volcanic cones on the southwest coast, (Gros Piton and Petit Piton), remain navigational aides for mariners, and are regarded as one of the Caribbean's most famous landmarks. Volcanic in origin, St. Lucia is dominated by dense jungle and a central ridge of forested mountains. The island is ringed with sandy beaches, friendly villages and spectacular scenery at every turn. The capital city of Castries and the surrounding resorts, as well as the coastal village of Soufriere and the nearby nature attractions are the major draws for visitors. http://www.atlapedia.com/online/countries/stlucia.htm EVENTS: Disaster Date Killed Wind Storm 3-Aug-1980 9 Wind Storm 10-Sep-1994 4 Wind Storm 8-Sep-1986 0 Disaster Date Affected Wind Storm 3-Aug-1980 80,000 Wind Storm 10-Sep-1994 750 Wind Storm 8-Sep-1986 0 date type reg. operator fat. location kind 30-NOV-1981 Douglas DC-6 N3486F Guyana Airways 3 Saint Lucia A1 23-OCT-1980 DH-114 Heron J6-LBC St. Lucia Airways 0 Saint Lucia O1 19-FEB-1979 Boeing 707 C-GQBH Quebecair 0 Saint Lucia A1 Best wishes, satva Jorge Angelino Rua da Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense, 29 2925-598 Azeitão Portugal jorge.angelino tel: mobile: 210813674 963916784 Add me to your address book...
