The explorer Alonso de Ojeda accompanied Columbus, and is generally

considered the first to find Suriname in 1498.

It was briefly held by the English from 1799 -1802,

but it was the Dutch that controlled the land for almost 300 years. Independence was finally

realized in 1975.

 Suriname is a small

developing nation with nearly 80% of the country covered with rainforests.

Dozens of rivers criss-cross the fertile landscape, and interior transportation

is almost exclusively by river.

Most of the population base is found along the

coastal areas in and near the capital city of Paramaribo.

The cooperation between Suriname and The Netherlands

collapsed when 15 political opponents were killed by the army at 8 december 1982.

Violence between pro- and anti-Army Indian groups

was particularly intense during February of this year.  On February 5, 1990, the Army, in an

attempt to protect its Indian allied, attacked the insurgents and reports

reaching the Commission indicate that at least 14 Indians were killed.

In this area lies the former village of Moiwana were

on November

29, 1986,

50 unarmed civilians were killed.

May 11, 1993 Paramaribo Suriname TV studio destroyed by

fire.
