It was Mustafa Kemal, a soldier and statesman, who decided to move the capital to Ankara, where it still remains. Kemal—who became known as Atatürk, meaning Father of the Turks—rescued what was left of the defeated Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I from the Allies who planned on dividing the remnants among themselves. His success in defeating the invading Greek forces and resistance to the Allies led to his election by the Grand National Assembly as the first president of the republic on October 29, 1923. http://www.enjoyturkey.com/info/history_turkey/turkey.htm Atatürk announces the opening of the Grand National Assembly with the following circular issued on April 21, 1920: On Friday, 23rd April, after prayer, the Grand National Assembly, God be willing, will be opened. As the duties of the National Assembly will be of a vital description and ofthe utmost importance—such as, securing the independence of our country and the deliverance of the seat of the Caliphate and Sultanate from the hands of our enemies—and as it will be opened on a Friday, the solemn character of this day will be acknowledged by offering solemn prayer, before the opening, in the Hacibayram Mosque . . . In every part of our sacred, suffering country the reading of the Koran and the Buhari will begin from today onward, and before Friday prayer the solemn call to prayer is to be intoned from the minarets . . . Sermons will also be delivered on the obligation of everyone to do his patriotic duty, which will be pointed out to him by the Grand National Assembly that comprises representatives of the whole nation. Prayers will then be said for the deliverance, salvation and independence of our Caliphate and Sultanate, of our Faith and our Empire, of our Country and our Nation . . . We pray God to grant that we may be successful. http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/europe/initiatives/pdf/Morin_Paper.pdf FOUNDING OF THE TURKISH GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY Everyone gathered around the Assembly Building in Ankara at an early hour on Friday morning, 23 April 1920. The people were full of excitement at taking their own fate under control. After the noonday prayer at the Haci Bayram Mosque, a magnificent ceremony was held at the entrance to the Assembly building which filled their eyes with tears. The 115 members of parliament who were able to come to Ankara convened in the Assembly hall at 1:45 p.m. http://www.tbmm.gov.tr/tgna/about_tgna.htm#FOUNDING%20OF%20THE%20TURKISH%20GRAND%20NATIONAL%20ASSEMBLY Founding of the Turkish Republic had been heralded by the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on 23 April 1920. http://www.kulturturizm.gov.tr/portal/tarih_en.asp?belgeno=5244 On July 24, 1923 Lausanne Peace Treaty signed by the representatives of the New Turkish Government on one side and by Britain, France, Italy, Japan. Greece, Romania and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) on the other. The treaty recognized the creation of a Turkish State with the same borders as those of the National Pact of 1920 and guaranteed her complete independence. Thus, it marked the successful culmination of the National War of Independence. http://www.mymerhaba.com/en/main/content.asp_Q_id_E_136 Disaster Date Killed Earthquake 26-Dec-1939 32,962 Earthquake 17-Aug-1999 17,127 Earthquake 29-Apr-1903 6,000 Earthquake 26-Nov-1942 4,000 Earthquake 1-Feb-1944 3,959 Earthquake 24-Nov-1976 3,840 Earthquake 20-Dec-1942 3,000 Earthquake 26-Nov-1943 2,824 Earthquake 19-Aug-1966 2,394 Earthquake 6-Sep-1975 2,385 Disaster Date Affected Earthquake 17-Aug-1999 1,358,953 Earthquake 30-Oct-1983 834,137 Earthquake 18-Sep-1984 375,038 Earthquake 18-Oct-1984 375,035 Earthquake 22-Jul-1967 326,073 Earthquake 12-Nov-1999 224,948 Earthquake 24-Nov-1976 216,000 Earthquake 19-Aug-1966 109,500 Epidemic Feb-1965 100,000 Epidemic Aug-1977 100,000 Disaster Date Killed Misc Accident 27-Nov-1954 2,000 Industrial Accident 3-Mar-1992 272 Misc Accident 13-Sep-1922 200 Industrial Accident 7-Mar-1983 98 Industrial Accident 24-Nov-1980 97 Transport Accident 1-Feb-1963 95 Transport Accident 8-Jan-2003 75 Transport Accident 26-May-2003 74 Transport Accident 20-Dec-2003 69 Industrial Accident 7-Feb-1990 68 Disaster Date Affected Misc Accident 17-Sep-1967 600 Transport Accident 4-Jan-1979 190 Misc Accident 5-Jul-2003 189 Industrial Accident 18-Nov-1994 175 Transport Accident 21-Jun-1994 140 Misc Accident 14-Dec-2004 130 Industrial Accident 9-Jul-1998 118 Misc Accident 12-May-1978 100 Transport Accident 9-Jan-1979 100 Industrial Accident 7-Mar-1983 86 date type registration operator fat. location pic cat 26-MAY-2003 Yakovlev 42 UR-42352 UM Air 75 Turkey A1 08-JAN-2003 BAe-146 TC-THG THY 75 Turkey A1 18-MAY-2001 CASA CN.235 TCSG-552 Turkish Navy 4 Turkey A1 16-MAY-2001 CASA CN.235 086 Turkish AF 34 Turkey A1 19-JAN-2001 CASA CN.235 097 Turkish AF 3 Turkey A1 29-DEC-1999 Antonov 28 3C-JJI Ecuato Guineana de Aviacion 6 Turkey A1 07-APR-1999 Boeing 737-400 TC-JEP THY 6 Turkey A1 29-OCT-1998 Boeing 737 TC-...
