That valuable geographical position for potential trade between continents became a curse of sorts. Over the centuries it was invaded and controlled by various empires, including the Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Persian, and Ottoman. Incorporated into the former Soviet Union in 1920, it finally, along with Azerbaijan, gained independence in 1991. Regional fighting with its neighbor (Azerbaijan) over land control bloodied both countrys, and a cease-fire agreement was finally reached in 1994. The local economy still suffers from the long-term ramifications of war, an Azerbaijan fuel blockade, and a very severe 1988 earthquake that destroyed much of its infrastructure, and killed over 55,000 of its citizens. http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/am.htm 23 August1990: Armenia’s Supreme Soviet accepts a declaration of independence which has been issued by parliament (with the exeption of Kirgistan and Kazakhstan, Armenia is the last former Soviet Republic to do so). The country changes its name into the Republic of Armenia but wants to stay inside the USSR. The right of reunification with Nagorno-Karabakh is demanded, national armed forces and international recognition of the Turkish massacres of Armenian in 1915 as genocide. 21 September 1991: Referendum held about secession from USSR: 99% of electors support independence (94% - 95% participation). 23 September 1991: Parliamentary declaration of independence. 20 October 1991: Declaration of independence formally comes into effect. http://www.v2.nl/~arns/Texts/Chrono/Armenia.html 13. In a national referendum on 21 September 1991, an overwhelming majority of the population supported independence, which was declared formally on 23 September 1991. Levon Ter-Petrossian, a member of the Karabagh Committee - the group which was chosen by the population to lead the democratic movement - was elected Chairman of the Parliament in August 1990 and President in October 1991. http://www.bayefsky.com/core/armenia_hri_core_1_add.57_1995.php On September 21, 1991, the all-national referendum proclaimed Armenia as an independent Republic. http://www.cba.am/abouthist.asp?hist=3 On September 21, 1991, the people of Armenia said an overwhelming " YES " to independence during a nationwide referendum, thus establishing the Independent Republic of Armenia and taking back was forcefully taken from the nation on December 2, 1920 when Soviet tanks rolled into Yerevan and began the process of Armenia's Sovietization. Nine years later we mark Sept. 21 as the day Armenia re-established its independence and recommit ourselves to ensuring that the Republic of Armenia will remain for centuries to come. http://www.arf.am/English/ARFNews/2000/200009.html Moreover, many of the pronouncements on national self-defense, economic autonomy, separate foreign policy, freedom of expression, and multiple forms of property ownership would find their way into the Armenian Supreme Soviet’s declaration of independence on August 24, 1990 (Although the official independence is considered September 21, 1991, the date of official, public independence referendum, Armenia was already de-facto independent by early 1990). http://www.hyeetch.nareg.com.au/armenians/prominent_p7.html In 1990, the Armenian National Movement won a majority of seats in the parliament and formed a government. On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people overwhelmingly voted in favor of independence in a national referendum, and an independent Armenia came into being. http://www.hyeetch.nareg.com.au/armenians/history_p1.html Disaster Date Killed Flood 22-Jun-1997 4 Flood 5-Mar-2004 1 Famine 7-Dec-1992 0 Earthquake 18-Jul-1997 0 Flood 30-May-1998 0 Drought Jun-2000 0 Disaster Date Affected Famine 7-Dec-1992 1,300,000 Drought Jun-2000 297,000 Earthquake 18-Jul-1997 15,000 Flood 22-Jun-1997 7,000 Flood 30-May-1998 144 Flood 5-Mar-2004 Disaster Date Killed Transport Accident 26-Dec-1993 35 Transport Accident 27-May-1993 30 Industrial Accident 8-Mar-1992 21 Misc Accident 4-Dec-1998 11 Misc Accident 1-Jun-1994 5 Disaster Date Affected Misc Accident 1-Jun-1994 750 Transport Accident 27-May-1993 48 Misc Accident 4-Dec-1998 12 Industrial Accident 8-Mar-1992 0 Transport Accident 26-Dec-1993 date type registration operator fat. location pic cat 21-OCT-1998 Yakovlev 40 EK-88272 Ararat Avia 0 Armenia A1 17-MAR-1994 Lockheed C-130 5-8521 Iran AF 32 Armenia O1 25-DEC-1993 Antonov 26 CCCP-26141 Yugavia 35 Armenia A1 12-DEC-1993 Antonov 8 RA-13323 Kadvi Comp. 0 Armenia A1 06-APR-1993 Antonov 24 YL-LCH Latavio 0 Armenia A1 27-FEB- 1993 (from Warwick files) 05-DEC-1992 Tupolev 154 CCCP-85105 Aeroflot / Armenia 0 Armenia A1 02-NOV-1991 (from Warwick files) 20-OCT-1989 Ilyushin 76 CCCP-76466 Aeroflot / Central Region 25 Armenia A1 18-OCT-1989 57 fatalities (from Warwick files) 12-DEC-1988 Antonov 12 YU-AID Yugoslav AF 7 Armenia A1 11-DEC-1988 Ilyushin 76 CCCP-86732 Soviet AF/Aeroflot 78 Armenia A1 20-NOV-1988 Antonov 8 CCCP-26183 MOM/NPO Energiya 0 Armenia A1 17-SEP-1988 (from Warwick files) 28-AUG-1987 Tupolev 134 CCCP-65727 Aeroflot / Azerbaijan 0 Armenia A1 24-JAN-1983 (from Warwick files) 19-APR-1983 Yakovlev 40 CCCP-87291 Aeroflot / Armenia 21 Armenia A1 18-JUL-1981 Canadair CL-44 LV-JTN TAR 4 Armenia A1 21-DEC-1973 Yakovlev 40 CCCP-87629 Aeroflot / Armenia 0 Armenia A1 02-SEP-1958 Lockheed C-130 56-0528 USAF 17 Armenia O1 On December 7, 1988, at 11:41 a.m. local time a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook northwestern Armenia and was followed four minutes later by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock, killing 25,000 people.
