A

U.S. military aircraft similar to this one has

crashed in Albania.

 (CNN) -- A U.S. military C-130 on a training mission with nine

people on board has crashed in Albania during apparent bad weather, and their fate was unknown, a

Pentagon official said.

The official said the Pentagon didn't know how many were U.S. military personnel.

A second military cargo plane on the same training mission

was aiding the search-and-rescue effort.

An Albanian defense ministry spokesman told The Associated

Press the plane had taken off from the capital's Mother Teresa Airport and crashed on Driza Mountain in the district of Gramsh,

80 kilometers (48 miles) southeast of Tirana.

" It is thought the people on board have died, but this

is not confirmed, " Reuters reported Public Order Ministry spokesman Florion

Serjani as saying.

Serjani said the mountainous terrain had forced police to

abandon their vehicles and proceed to the crash site on foot, according to

Reuters.

It reported that Albania's general staff chief Pellumb

Qazimi had sent troops to the area and would fly helicopters there by dawn.
