The tremor triggered a tsunami alert for the Pacific coastal region and shook buildings in Tokyo, more than 300km (186 miles) away. The quake's epicentre is thought to have been 20km (12.4 miles) below the ocean off Miyagi prefecture, striking at around 1146 (0246GMT). There are reports of dozens of people injured in the nearby city of Sendai.
