FLOODS STRIKE AGAIN IN ROMANIA - AUGUST 2005

Torrential rains that fell during the night of Wednesday through Thursday

doubled the damages caused by floods Wednesday. More than 9,000 gendarmes and

police are participating in interventions aimed at evacuating and rescuing the

persons in deluge-hit areas.

 

According to the sum-up report tendered yesterday to the minister of

Administration and Interior, Vasile Blaga, the downpour brought damage to 21

counties, from 13 reported Wednesday. The hardest hit were the counties of Arges,

Bacau, Dimbovita, Dolj, Gorj, Mehedinti, Mures, Oil, Teleorman

and Valcea. Authorities in Teleorman have asked for emergency food assistance

from the state reserves.
