Sub-Continent Earthquake – at a glance

October 8th earthquake toll tops 30,000 so far in northern region of Pakistan and Kashmir. It is feared that this figure might cross 50,000. Saturday's 7.6 magnitude quake unleashed its worst fury on Azad Kashmir, wiping entire towns off the map and burying victims in tombs of mud and rubble. Authorities called it the most devastating tragedy in the country’s history. In the Indian sector of Kashmir, an official said more than 600 people had been killed there and the number was likely to rise. BBC says ‘’although the tremor was felt as far afield as Kabul and Delhi, the main areas affected have been Azad Kashmir and Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province.’’

Here under I attempted to astrologically figure out the causes and succinctly delineate aforesaid mournful calamity. So far, it is neither technologically nor astrologically possible to trace out time and space of massive natural disaster apriori. In the past, though some experts succeeded to point out the possibility of quake/volcano etc with some broader time limits. But pin-pointing the place is still an unsolved paradox. Gujarat quake 2001, Iran quake 2003, Tsunami 2004, Katrina, Hurricane all are eye-opening examples. Honestly speaking, ours (astrologers) share in alerting

the masses and authorities before possible disaster, is literally meager, (well, you may rebut this perception). I don’t know when astrologers would be able to construct error-free and viable forecasting methodology.

I simply discussed some widely accepted and time-tested forecasting techniques, viz.; Chaitra Shuklapratipad, Varshphala, and Eclipse chart. In all cases, the focus has been on the affliction to 4th house, lord etc. and Karaka of masses and natural calamity. As the year 2005 not only brought October 8th tremor but also caused a disastrous flood in June’05 and acutely hit public purchasing power due to inexorable increase in oil prices.

Sagittarius ascends along with evil upgrahas Gulika and Mandi and retrograde Pluto. But more important is the placement of maraka Saturn which is residing at 27th degree of Gemini (in the nakshatra of lagna/4th lord) and powerfully aspects the lagna, Moon and Sun. Affliction to Sun-Moon-Lagna trinity foretells an uneasy year as a whole. On the other hand, Rahu and the Sun severely afflicts the forth house that traditionally stands for masses, public affairs, rivers and land structure. The Suklapratipad at Islamabad commences at Friday and hence Venus attains the status of lord of the year. Her strength and placement portrays the general trend of events during whole year. Varahamihira described mostly favourable results, like rich crops and timely rain; just rulers and general well beings of people.

Venus though vargottam in her exaltation sign but combust and thus unable to yield expected auspicious results. Secondly, mischievous Rahu resided just next to her. In short Venus is sandwiched between Sun and Rahu. Again maraka Saturn makes an acute angle (full tenth aspect) to Venus and further feeble her. It should be borne in mind that Varahamihira related Kashmir and norther region with Venus. Cluster of grahas in 4th house, under affliction of Rahu and Saturn definitely leads to massive disaster, natural calamity or public anarchy in the country. It is a time-tested combination enunciated by J.C.Luthera.

Summing up all, the concentration of evil elements are oblique towards forth house. Even looking rashi with respect to Arudha lagna (AL), we confront Saturn occupied in 4th house. The very Saturn also cast papa argala to the Moon.

It is interesting to note that the lord of the year – Venus was transiting into ending degrees of Cancer (8th house of Chaitra Suklapratipad Rashi) when Pakistan government launched a massive operation against religious schools in the country after July 7 London blast. As a results lots of madrassa students were arrested and foreigner students were announced to be deported. Now at the time of quake the very Venus (and Moon) was moving into Scorpio – the 12th house.

Amongst various divisional charts Chaturthamsa stands for residence and landed property in natal charts (Jataka). Whereas in mundane charts it describes the situation of land structure, construction industry, property price trend etc. But I presume that D4 may also explain Earth Quakes and Floods when analyzed along with D30 which is the cosmic manifestation of evil forces. In the D4 of aforesaid Suklapratipad; evil axis of Rahu-Ketu again falls in 4th-10th and encompassing the lord of the year Venus and Moon-the karaka of masses. Saturn again occupying the 7th house and cast (rashi) drishti to 4th house and cluster of planets there.

Varshphala (Solar Return Chart) is no less significant to trace mundane timing of event. Here Aquarius rises with Uranus-R which is modern significator of unexpected natural calamities and sudden changes. Since Vaar, Muntha, Lagna, and Hora all are lorded by Saturn therefore it well qualifies for the lord of the year. Its location in 6th house weakening the whole chart; despite Saturn is not combust. Apparently 4th house is flawless but its lord (Venus) is suffering from debilitation and occupies in 8th while its dipositor (Mercury) is in 6th house. Moreover Venus is the lord of Mrityu Saham and placed with Kali Saham. These all indicate possibilities of massive disaster. Rather discussing tajik yogas, its significant to note that all the trinal as well as kendara lords fall into dustana bhavas (3,6,8,12) and hence no protective shield exist to function against evils.

As earlier discussed, Saturn as the lord of the year and dispositor of Uranus, is badly placed in 6th house. In D30, Saturn is in 4th house while 4th lord (Mercury) is debilitated in 10th under aspect of Saturn and Mars. Moon (significator of public) is into sign of Mars and (both in D1 and D4). No wonder Saturn and/or Mars dasha would lead to natural calamity and harm the masses at large level. As per Patyayini, Saturn dasha ranges from September 30 to December 21, 2005. The fatal earthquake shook the northern land of country on October 8, 2005 while Sa/Sa/Ma was running.

Eclipses are more meaningful interpreters in mundane chart than natal. October 3 solar eclipse falls in visible horizon and thus important here. It would be worth mentioning that it falls exactly on the radix Neptune of Pakistan. And 4th from natal Moon (infact the longitudinal differences is 88 degrees i.e. increasing square). October 3rd eclipse occurred on Monday (which is lorded by Moon) while in natal chart of Pakistan, Moon lords 4th house. More significant is that on October 8th, Moon was in its sign of debilitation. In eclipse chart, again 4th house is fully aspected by Saturn and Rahu. The Saturn+Mars combination can also be observed in D4. Whereas lord of 4th house – Mars is weakly placed in 4th both in D1 and D9. Due to rashi sandhi, oblivion Mars is more fatal to significance of 4th house. It is also noticeable that eclipse falls in the

sign of Mercury and in eclipse chart Mercury falls into nakshatra of 4th Lord Mars.
