The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. In 2000, Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed to a delimitation of their border. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ym.html An agreement between North and South was finally reached, and in Aden on May 22, 1990, Saleh raised the flag of the new Independent Republic of Yemen. http://www.internationalspecialreports.com/middleeast/00/yemen/ Following months of tense relations between the president and vice-president, civil war re-erupted in April 1994 and in May al-Baidh announced South Yemen's secession from the union. In July 1994 the northern forces of President Saleh inflicted a crushing defeat on those of al-Baidh, effectively ending the nine-week civil war. http://www.tiscali.co.uk/reference/encyclopaedia/hutchinson/m0018495.html Despite this, clashes intensified until civil war broke out in early May 1994. Ali Nasir Muhammad supporters greatly assisted military operations against the secessionists and Aden was captured on 7 July 1994. Other resistance quickly collapsed and thousands of southern leaders and military went into exile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Yemen Disaster Date Killed Flood 13-Jun-1996 338 Flood Aug-1998 67 Epidemic 10-Sep-2000 32 Flood 5-Feb-1993 31 Flood 26-Jul-2001 31 Flood 22-Aug-2002 28 Wind Storm 12-Aug-2001 17 Flood 19-Jun-2003 15 Wind Storm 9-Jun-2001 13 Flood 24-Jul-2002 13 Disaster Date Affected Flood 13-Jun-1996 238,210 Earthquake 22-Nov-1991 40,039 Flood Dec-1991 30,000 Flood 5-Feb-1993 21,500 Flood 4-Dec-1999 19,750 Flood 16-Mar-1998 3,000 Flood 25-Apr-2005 715 Flood 11-Apr-2002 700 Epidemic 10-Sep-2000 289 Epidemic 25-Feb-2005 179 Disaster Date Killed Transport Accident 31-Mar-1998 180 Transport Accident 18-Aug-1995 131 Transport Accident 22-Jun-1992 90 Transport Accident 4-Jan-2003 80 Transport Accident 14-Jul-1992 57 Transport Accident 13-Sep-2003 45 Industrial Accident 15-May-1996 38 Transport Accident 6-Apr-2004 21 Transport Accident 11-Aug-2001 20 Misc Accident 22-Jul-2004 20 Disaster Date Affected Industrial Accident 15-May-1996 100 Transport Accident 6-Apr-2004 65 Misc Accident 21-Oct-1999 32 Transport Accident 4-Jan-2003 25 Transport Accident 18-Aug-2003 18 Misc Accident 19-May-2001 16 Transport Accident 6-Sep-2000 4 Transport Accident 11-Aug-2001 1 Transport Accident 14-Jul-1992 0 Transport Accident 22-Jun-1992 0 date type registration operator fat. location pic cat 31-MAR-2005 Antonov 12 UN-11007 RPS Air Freight 0 Yemen A1, It overran by 400 metres and caught fire. 02-SEP-1994 Jetstream 31 HB-AEB Zimex Aviation 0 Yemen O1, Damaged beyond repair in shelling 20-MAY-1994 unknown South Yemen AF 0 Yemen O1 17-JUL-1992 Antonov 12 Yemen AF 57 Yemen A1 22-Nov-91 Mild Earthquake Hits Southern Yemen Province, 10 Killed 16-Jul-92 Yemen air crash 30-Apr-93 Eight Reported Killed In Yemen Election Violence 3-May-93 Twenty-five people killed in rocket attack on YSP office in Hajjah 11-Aug-93 Two MiG-21 jet fighters crash over Red Sea; Pilots missing 19-Apr-94 President vows Yemen to stay united. 21-Apr-94 South Yemnis say north moving troops to south. 28-Apr-94 Battles resume between Yemen rivals.
