Hundreds

stranded after blizzards

Hundreds

of people are spending the night away from home after blizzards and icy

conditions closed schools and blocked roads across the UK.

In Cornwall, the military was

called after up to 1,000 motorists were stranded in snow. Some 500 people are

spending the night at leisure centres.

Elsewhere, roads were blocked, schools closed and power lines

brought down in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Ice is expected to cause problems across the country early on

Saturday.

The BBC Weather Centre has warned more snow could be on the way

for the Midlands and south-east England, although a

repeat of Friday's blizzards is not

expected.
