Guest guest
Vanuatu volcano activity weakens By Radio New Zealand International Posted Thursday, December 8, 2005 Scientists in Vanuatu monitoring Mount Monaro volcano, which has been emitting ash and gas for more than a week on the island of Ambae, have reported activity has lessened over the last 24 hours. The director of the Disaster Management Centre, Job Esau, says more than 2,000 people are living in emergency accommodation although hundreds are refusing to leave their settlements near the volcano. Scientists say seismic activity is less and gas emissions have reduced by 25 percent, but the level of alert remains the same, because the volcanic cone is increasing which could cause more dry ash to fall. Since the volcanic explosion last week, ash has fallen on western parts of Ambae at a rate of 2,000 tonnes a day and should that become worse, Mr Esau says Red Cross are standing by with 2,000 respiratory masks for the elderly and children. Mr Esau says the most pressing challenge is finding enough water for the evacuees. http://www.news.vu/en/news/environment/051208-Vanuatu-volcano-activity-weakens.shtml Vanuatu – Volcanic Eruption Mt. Ambae By United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Posted Thursday, December 1, 2005 Vanuatu: Volcanic Eruption OCHA Situation Report No. 1 Ref: OCHA/GVA - 2005/0212 OCHA Situation Report No. 1 Vanuatu – Volcanic Eruption This situation report is based on information provided by the Government of Vanuatu and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Fiji. Situation 1. Mt. Ambae volcano erupted on 27 November in Ambae Island of Vanuatu. Twelve to fifteen villages with a total population of about 5,000 have been affected. No casualties have been reported. There are no damages to houses except that they are covered with ash. Although people are still living in their homes, ash could affect their respiratory system and contaminate the source of water supply. Food crops have also been covered with ash. They have crops to last for only one to two weeks. 2. Ambae has a crater lake. There is a risk that the volcano could further erupt and cause flooding in the valleys. The Government may need to evacuate about 5,000 people in the high-risk area. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is working on an evacuation plan. http://www.news.vu/en/news/environment/051201-Vanuatu-Volcanic-Eruption-Mt-Ambae.shtml Dear List Members, Dasha: Ju/Ke/Ve/Ke/Sa.
