Some of the events/facts

used in the rectification:

 

The country obtained its

long-awaited freedom after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In a referendum

on Turkmenistan's independence held on October 26,

1991, the absolute majority of the population voted for independent

development. The results of the referendum were announced the following day at

the session of the Supreme Council of Turkmen SSR, when Turkmenistan was

proclaimed an independent democratic state. That date was declared to be

" Independence Day " for Turkmenistan.

1997  Dec 29, Turkmenistan

and Iran activated a key 125 mile gas pipeline. Plans were to make it part of a

network to Europe but for now the gas was only bound to northeastern Iran.

Collision between a bus and a train. The accident took place on Friday night at

a level crossing near the capital, Ashkhabad.

 

December 30, 1998 gunmen

shot dead three Turkmen border officials

 

7 December 2000 (RFE/RL) --

A powerful earthquake measuring about 7.5 on the Richter Scale struck western

Turkmenistan late yesterday (Wednesday). The quake struck around 2300 local

time. 11 people were killed and another five were injured.

 

17 January 2001 -- Niyazov

fires Prime Ministers Chary Yazlyev, responsible for education, and Khudaikuli

Khalykov, responsible for transportation and communications;

 

15-16 April 2002 -- Group of

50 people protest outside National Security Committee (KNB) building in

Ashgabat, demanding that corrupt KNB officials be punished for abuses

 

On July 8, 2002, the

Azerbaijani tanker General Shikhlinskiy exploded in the Turkmen port of

Turkmenbashi, killing six Azeri sailors.

and 1,000 inmates at Turkmenistan's southern

Tejen prison broke loose

 

25 November 2002 (RFE/RL) --

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov survived an attempt on his life as he

drove through the capital Ashgabat today. The attack occurred at around 7 a.m.

(RFE/RL) -- Seven people were killed and scores more injured after an apparent

gas explosion in a residential area of the Turkmen capital Ashgabat last night.

in air collision. The Hercules C-130 from RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire landed

safely after being hit over Turkmenistan by what reports suggest was a Mig
