Following the break-up of

the former Soviet Union, Tajikistan became an independent Republic on 9

September 1991. Largely unprepared for this new reality, Tajikistan soon faced

an acute social and economic crisis as the previous interdependent central

planning system disintegrated.

As a consequence, civil war

erupted in May 1992, with the heaviest fighting taking place in the latter half

of the year. The armed conflict continued for the next four years with varying

degrees of intensity.
