Beijing has just

lifted a 12-year ban on fireworks

 

 

 

An

explosion at a fireworks warehouse has killed 16 people in central China on

the first day of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The victims were enjoying a temple fair in Henan province when

a nearby storeroom full of fireworks exploded, officials said on Monday.

The accident, which happened on Sunday

in Anyang, injured up to 40 others, the French

news agency AFP said.

China has gradually been lifting a 12-year

ban on fireworks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In the capital, 112 people were treated

in emergency hospital rooms over the weekend, including 17 people with

serious eye injuries.

In the south-western city of Chongqing, nearly 200

fires were caused by fireworks on Sunday - New Year's Eve, Xinhua
