Walls were cracked (MM VI)

at Blaine from a January 11, 1909, earthquake. Another shock occurred in the

same region on January 23, 1920.

 

On July 15, 1936, a

magnitude 5 3/4 earthquake was centered near the Washington State line between

Walla Walla, Washington, and Milton, Oregon.

 

Another shock of magnitude 5

3/4 originated near Olympia on November 12, 1939.

 

Minor damage, such as

cracked plaster and chimneys (MM VI - VII), was reported from North Bend,

Palmer, and Stampede Pass following an earthquake on April 29, 1945.

 

A shock, which reached a

maximum intensity of VII at a number of places in the Puget Sound area was felt

over about 182,000 square km, occurred on February 14, 1946.

 

One of the strongest

earthquakes on record for the Puget Sound area followed a few months later. A

magnitude 7.3 shock in the Strait of Georgia on June 23, 1946, caused the bottom of Deep Bay

to sink between 2.7 and 25.6 meters.

 

Property damage estimated at

upwards of $25 million resulted from a magnitude 7.0 earthquake near Olympia on

April 13, 1949.

 

On November 5, 1962, a

moderately strong earthquake caused minor damage in the Vancouver, Washington -

Portland, Oregon, area.

 

A magnitude 6.5 shock on

April 29, 1965, which was centered very close to the epicenter of the 1949

earthquake, caused about $12.5 million damage.

Yacolt Fire burned 238,000 acres in Oregon and Washington and killed 38 people.

 

1910        Mar 1, The worst

snow slide in US history buried 3 passenger trains at Steven's Pass in

the Cascade Range and 118 died.

 

1921        Jan 29, A

hurricane hit Washington and Oregon.

 

1965        Apr 29, Seattle

experienced an earthquake. 7 people were killed and damage was estimated at

$12.5 million.

 

1980        May 18, At 8:32

a.m. Mount Saint Helens, in Washington, erupted. It burst 3 times in 24 hours

after rumbling for two months and left 57 people dead or missing.

 

1984        Mar 19, Mobil

oil tanker spilled 200,000 gallons into the

Columbia River.

 

1998        Apr 27, In

Arlington a fire at a 90-year-old building, used as a home for the elderly,

killed 7 residents.

 

1998        Nov 25, An

explosion at the Equilon Puget Sound Refining Co. at Anacortes killed 6 people.

 

1999        Jan 13, A KC-135

refueling tanker crashed while landing near Geilenkirchen, Germany, and 4 US

airmen were killed.

 

1999        Jun 11, In

Bellingham 88,000 gallons of gasoline from the Olympic spilled into a

creek and exploded after about 15 minutes. Two boys, Wade King (10) and Stephen

Tsiorvas (10), and Liam Wood (18) were killed in the resulting fireball.

 

1999        Jul 16, A fire

in Spokane destroyed  most of a downtown city block and left 108 people

homeless.

 

2001        Sep 12, In

Mexico a twin-engine LET 410 plane crashed in the Yucatan and all 19 people

aboard were killed. The 16 passengers were all Seattle-area tourists on a

Holland America cruise.

 

2002        Mar 28, The last

Boeing 307 Stratoline crash-landed in the water in Puget Sound near Seattle. 4 people

aboard were rescued.
