Earthquake History of

Connecticut

The lack of historical and

instrumental reports of strong earthquakes in Connecticut suggests that State

to be a region of very minor seismic activity, even when compared to other

States in the northeast region.

The most severe earthquake

in Connecticut's history occurred at East Haddam on

May 16, 1791.

Describing that earthquake

an observer said: " It began at 8 o'clock p.m.,

with two very heavy shocks in quick succession. The first was the most

powerful; the earth appeared to undergo very violent convulsions.

On June 30, 1858, New Haven

was shaken by a moderate tremor at 10:45 in the evening.

Seventeen years later, on

July 28, an early morning tremor shook 2,000 square miles of Connecticut and

Massachusetts. Rumbling noises were heard during this intensity V earthquake.

The strongest tremor since

that in 1791 hit near Hartford on November 14, 1925, at about 8 a.m.

An intensity V earthquake in

southern Connecticut occurred on November 3, 1968, at about 3:30 in the

morning.

A devastating earthquake

near Tros-Rivieres (Three Rivers), Quebec, on February 5, 1663, caused moderate

effects in some areas of Connecticut.

Hi Jorge, How did you arrive at this rectification? As I read the copy posted by the Avalon Project, the delegates signed on the 8th; the Convention secretary's report is dated and signed on the 9th. Dear John,

I got it from:

Hilary T. Frye

Legal Reference Specialist

Law & Legislative

Reference Unit

Connecticut State Library

She told me that:

Dear Jorge

Angelino;

The voting occurred shortly

before 5:30 p.m. on January 9, 1788 and it was in Hartford.

This information is

contained in the journal and letters of two of the convention delegates:

A delegate named Ezra Stiles

kept a diary which reads:

January 9.  At V h 30'

[5:30 p.m.] the convention at Hartford accepted and ratified the new Federal

Constitution.

The diary of Ezra Stiles is

a manuscript at the Bienecke Library at Yale University. This information was

reprinted in The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution by

the States, vol. 3, p. 566.

Another delegate gives the

same time in a letter:

Pierpont Edwards to Samuel

Russel, Hartford, 5:30 p.m., January 9

We have this moment finished

taking the yeas and nays, and by the enclosed copy of the roll of the

Convention you will learn that there were 128 for and 39 [40] against adopting

the Federal Constitution.

Once again, the original is

in the Beinecke Library at Yale University.

This was also reprinted in

The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution by the States,

vol. 3, p. 564.

Best wishes,

Jorge

Hi Jorge,

How did you arrive at

this rectification?

As I read the copy

posted by the Avalon Project, the delegates signed on the 8th; the

Convention secretary's report is dated and signed on the 9th.

Cheers

Earthquake History

of Connecticut

The lack of

historical and instrumental reports of strong earthquakes in Connecticut

suggests that State to be a region of very minor seismic activity, even when

compared to other States in the northeast region.

The most severe

earthquake in Connecticut's history occurred at East Haddam on May 16, 1791.

Describing that

earthquake an observer said: " It began at 8 o'clock p.m., with two very

heavy shocks in quick succession. The first was the most powerful; the earth

appeared to undergo very violent convulsions.

On June 30, 1858,

New Haven was shaken by a moderate tremor at 10:45 in the evening.

Seventeen years

later, on July 28, an early morning tremor shook 2,000 square miles of

Connecticut and Massachusetts. Rumbling noises were heard during this intensity

V earthquake.

The strongest tremor

since that in 1791 hit near Hartford on November 14, 1925, at about 8 a.m.

An intensity V

earthquake in southern Connecticut occurred on November 3, 1968, at about 3:30

in the morning.

A devastating

earthquake near Tros-Rivieres (Three Rivers), Quebec, on February 5, 1663,

caused moderate effects in some areas of Connecticut.

Well, I sure feel better now, knowing that the justly renowned Yale University's Avalon Project isn't above making, however rare, a human mistake. Jorge Angelino <jorge.angelino wrote: Dear John, I got it from: Hilary T. Frye Legal Reference Specialist Law & Legislative Reference Unit Connecticut State Library She told me

that: Dear Jorge Angelino; The voting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on January 9, 1788 and it was in Hartford. This information is contained in the journal and letters of two of the convention delegates: A delegate named Ezra Stiles kept a diary which reads: January 9. At V h 30' [5:30 p.m.] the convention at Hartford accepted and ratified the new Federal Constitution. The diary of Ezra Stiles is a manuscript at the Bienecke Library at Yale University. This information was reprinted in The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution by the States, vol. 3, p. 566. Another delegate gives the same time in a letter: Pierpont Edwards to Samuel Russel, Hartford, 5:30 p.m., January 9 We have this moment finished taking the yeas and nays, and by the enclosed copy of the roll of the Convention you will learn that there were 128 for and 39 [40] against adopting the Federal Constitution. Once again, the original is in the Beinecke Library at Yale University. This was also reprinted in The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution by the States, vol. 3, p.

As I read the copy posted by the Avalon Project, the delegates signed on the 8th; the Convention secretary's report is dated and signed on the 9th. Jorge) Intensity VII Earthquake History of Connecticut The lack of historical and instrumental reports of strong earthquakes in Connecticut suggests that State to be a region of very minor seismic activity, even when compared to other States in the northeast region. The most severe earthquake in Connecticut's history occurred at East Haddam on May 16, 1791. Describing that earthquake an observer said: "It began at 8 o'clock p.m., with two very heavy shocks in quick succession. The first was the most powerful; the earth appeared to undergo very violent convulsions. On June 30, 1858, New Haven was shaken by a moderate tremor at 10:45 in the evening. Seventeen years later, on July 28, an early morning tremor shook 2,000 square miles of Connecticut and Massachusetts. Rumbling noises were heard during this intensity V earthquake. The strongest tremor since that in 1791

hit near Hartford on November 14, 1925, at about 8 a.m. An intensity V earthquake in southern Connecticut occurred on November 3, 1968, at about 3:30 in the morning. A devastating earthquake near Tros-Rivieres (Three Rivers), Quebec, on February 5, 1663, caused moderate effects in some areas of

Connecticut. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/states/connecticut/history.php 04-AUG-2003, 06:39, Learjet 35 N135PT Air East Management 2 Groton, CT A1 12-NOV-1995, 00:55 EST, MD-80 N566AA American Airlines 0 East Granby, CT A2 17-AUG-1993, 02:25 EDT, Metro N220KC Aviation Services 2 Hartford, CT A1 01-FEB-1982, 00:45, Beech 99 N451C Pilgrim Airlines 0 Groton, CT A1 10-FEB-1970, 18:37 EST, DHC-6 Twin Otter N124PM Pilgrim Airlines 5
