The most severe earthquake in Connecticut's history occurred at East Haddam on May 16, 1791. Describing that earthquake an observer said: " It began at 8 o'clock p.m., with two very heavy shocks in quick succession. The first was the most powerful; the earth appeared to undergo very violent convulsions. On June 30, 1858, New Haven was shaken by a moderate tremor at 10:45 in the evening. As I read the copy posted by the Avalon Project, the delegates signed on the 8th; the Convention secretary's report is dated and signed on the 9th. This information is contained in the journal and letters of two of the convention delegates: A delegate named Ezra Stiles kept a diary which reads: January 9. At V h 30' [5:30 p.m.] the convention at Hartford accepted and ratified the new Federal Constitution. The diary of Ezra Stiles is a manuscript at the Bienecke Library at Yale University. This information was reprinted in The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution by the States, vol. 3, p. 566. Another delegate gives the same time in a letter: Pierpont Edwards to Samuel Russel, Hartford, 5:30 p.m., January 9 We have this moment finished taking the yeas and nays, and by the enclosed copy of the roll of the Convention you will learn that there were 128 for and 39 [40] against adopting the Federal Constitution.
