Police said the convoy collided with a rush-hour traffic jam. The incident sparked angry scenes in which crowds shouting anti-US slogans began throwing stones and burning cars, police said. The violence soon degenerated into an exchange of gunfire, although there are conflicting reports about who was doing the shooting - US troops or Afghans. Checkpoint blaze " We can confirm there was a traffic accident in Kabul involving coalition forces which sparked a demonstration which went violent, " Afghan interior ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanizai said. Hundreds of Afghans gathered in the wake of the accident chanting " Death to America " and " Death to Karzai " , referring to the Afghan President Hamid Karzai. They pelted the US military vehicles with rocks before the shooting began, forcing them to scatter. Two police vehicles and a police checkpoint were set alight, witnesses said. " People are very angry, " resident Samad Shah said. The US-led coalition in Kabul confirmed there had been an accident but did not give any details. " We are looking into it.
