An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 shook northern

Japan early Saturday, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the Meteorological

Agency said.

The quake occurred at 3:32 a.m. (1732 GMT

Friday) and was centered about 50 kilometers (30 miles) below the

seabed, off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, about 300 kilometers (180 miles)

northeast of Tokyo, the agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Japan is one of the

world's most earthquake-prone countries because it sits atop four tectonic

plates, reports AP
