Dear GG here is a bit from a student on shapas:

In my experience there is not per se a chapter that deals with

shapas/curses. The knowledge of shapas is a trait of the parampara - its

a highly sophisticated and relevant knowledge. It includes the level of

awareness one had when one did something, the intention – ie. was it

good or bad. The causes for the shapa. Remedies to get out of a shapa.

The knowledge also include whether it's a person or a devata which

is cursing the native and so on.

Nature of a shapa

The effect of a shapa on the moon can vary - depending on its avastha,

rulership, placement from Lagna, AL and Karaka Lagna ( the sign

Atmakaraka is in). The worst are when the malefics in the curse are in

the 3, 6 or 11th from AL or the curse itself is placed similarly. Then

the person took something from others.

If the badakesh is involved either as the cursed or cursing then it may

be Gauri herself which is displeased in the case of the Moon. If its

Mercury its Vishnu, if the Sun its Shiva and so on - hence its a devata

shapa which naturally isn't easy to remedy.

If the cursed planet is in uccha or in another high avastha then the

person was very much aware that he/she was doing something wrong. If in

a low avastha i.e. enemies sign etc. then he/she did not know what

he/she was doing.

If the curse is in a good house i.e. the Kendra/trikona houses then the

intention the person had was good – maybe the person slew a man who

tried to kill his children. This is considered a good bad thing. Hence

the shapa will normally be in a Kendra/trikona and this kind of shapa

will have the propensity to be worked out.

Here we also have to look at the sign. If the shapa is in a sthira sign

then it adds to the difficulty, dual is a bit better and movable is even

less of a problem. Irrespective of sign and house we should not stop

working on the situation through performing remedies. It will in the

final analysis help us later.

Normally, we look for the person which falls under the karakatwas of the

planet which is cursed. So the mother or a figure which was like a

mother to the native would be the source of the curse of moon.

To learn about shapas we traditionally look to Shri Rama's chart.

Karka Lagna – with Moon and Jupiter,

(Saturn) in the 4th

Rahu in the 6th

Mars in the 7th

Venus in the 9th

Sun in the 10th

Mercury in the 11th

He had a Brahmin curse in his chart. Jupiter and Moon are in Karka Lagna

and as you correctly stated 2 malefics have to aspect in order for a

shapa to be in effect, so looking for that in his chart we find that

Saturn and Mars are aspecting by graha dristhi – so we have a curse.

When there are more planets being aspected by 2 or more malefices then

we always take the more benefic planet to be the one suffering – its

like a party of pirates where its always the young virgin that will

suffer the most among the prisoners. So Jupiter and not the Moon will

suffer. Vishnu had been cursed by Naarada muni – a Brahmin =

Jupiter. So for that reason Jupiter suffers in the chart of Raama.

Vishnu had to reincarnate as Raama to work out this shapa.

There is a range here. For instance if Venus is under a shapa it may not

be that the spouse is suffering as such, then the 7th lord or house has

to be involved but the experience of the native has elements of

suffering in it since it's the karaka for relationships. Remember

here that karaka is the mind of the native. Raama had the best of

teachers and gurus and he learned well.

Severity of experience

Further aspects here involve the nature and lordships of the cursing

planets. If the AK is involved then the native will remember the

experience of this present curse as long as he/she lives and also beyond

that. If the 8th lord is involved then he/she will feel punished.

If the Lagnesha is involved then his/her intelligence will be affected,

if badakesh is involved it's a devata level curse and so on.

The nimittas and causes

There are nimittas in a chart which show how the curse works. The first

level is of course the house where the curse is and the cursed planet.

Venus in a shapa in the 12th house may give the first nimitta like this:

Venus = partner, 12th house = loss of partner. So this is where the

problem is. If you have a curse in the 11th house money may be a

problem. This is the first level nimitta for such a curse in the 11th

Bhava.

For Raama the first part of the nimitta was Raamas status itself. The

Lagna is the throne and fame. Jupiter rules the 9th and his father told

him to leave. For a heir-apparent to go and live in the forest is not

good – its infamous. So the moment that Raama had to move from the

palace the curse had begun. This is the first level nimitta of

Raama's curse.

The 2nd level nimitta is seen from where the participating malefics are

placed and their nature. Shani is in the 4th, which is home and also

mother, in this case step-mother. Shani's nature is sorrow and the

planet gave Raama sorrow through exile and the dealings of his

stepmother who caused his father to act against him. Mars gave him anger

and the experience of war by being in the 7th house and also problems

regarding spouse – Siita was snatched by Ravana.

Going even deeper we can analyse the reasons behind the shapa when we

look at the lordships of the participating malefics. For Raama it's

the lordships of shani and mangala which are the 5th , 7th , 8th and the

10th houses.

Naarada wanted to get married and Vishnu stopped it. Ok 7th is sustained

by the 8th and the 5th is the product of a marriage and also students

and the 10th is the profession (has UL in it by the way= Siita). Naarada

wanted to get married and change his profession (10th) – from that

of a perfect brahmacharya to a plain ïŠ householder (7th and 8th)

with children (5th house) – this would have affected all the devas

which were his students ie. the 5th house. Vishnu stopped Naarada from

getting married and in return Naarada cursed Vishnu. With the knowledge

of the event we can se from the aforesaid houses ruled by the shapa

inflicting malefics what karma were accrued by Vishnu when he stopped

Naarada's marriage.

Here we arrive at the ultimate reason for the shapa in Raama's

chart. These 4 houses lorded by the 2 inflicting malefics represents the

areas in Naarada's life that Vishnu affected through his actions.

Naarada acted based on the negative influence on these houses alone and

constitute the reasons for him cursing Vishnu.

The nature of the cursed planet reveals from whom Vishnu reaped his

karma back at the time of infliction – its Jupiter (Naarada) which

came right back to Vishnu and cursed him. So if the Sun is cursed in a

chart then a father or father like figure felt reason to curse, if its

Venus, it's a partner or a partner like person who felt like cursing

a native and so on.

We can also see since Jupiter is uccha – that Vishnu was totally

aware of what he was doing when he stopped Naarada's attempt to

become a householder – and since the curse is in the Lagna we

understand that Vishnu's intention behind stopping Naarada was the

benign intent to maintain the world in good working order – what

would happen to the world if Naarada the perfect one would become like

everyone else! Vishnu took action to save the rest of us. Hence the

shapa is in a Kendra – Lagna – and has the propensity to be

worked out in Raama's lifetime - and as we know eventually Raama did

win Siita back and did become a highly acclaimed ruler of Ayodhya.

Remedies

Regarding the remedies – it's a guru affair – there are some

general rules to go by though. You find the house from the Lagna where

the curse takes place. Then first you look at the bhavesha and if this

is well placed you use a remedy for this planet. Well placed = Kendra,

trikona. If this is not the case then you move on to the main Bhava

karaka, for instance the Sun for Lagna, Jupiter for the 2nd house, and

so on. If this isn't well placed either then we move on to the

tattva of the house.

For Lagna the worship on tattva level is with the Gayatri, Vishnu for

2nd house, 5th , 9th and 11th, Prajapati for the 3rd, Parvati for the

4th, Shiva for the 6th, 8th and 12th, Laxmi for the 7th and Saraswati

for the 10th.

This last tier of remedies are very slow to work – it's a life

project but worthwhile.

We tend to redo our mistakes over and over again. So we just have to get

to work.

There are more to be said on shapas so I suggest you listen to the
