In addition to what Narasimha has said I wish to add that:

Mars is also karaka for blood. Now you can imagine what is the

relationship between us and mother - the blood factor. Hence, Mars is one

of the significators for mother apart from Moon. We consider the stronger

one of the two to decide the karakatwa. Maharishi Jaimini is very clear on

this and is very

much there in Sanjay's UPSJ.
