Jaya Jagannath

Dear Narasimha,

Ri as in Nri-Simha or in Bri-haspati. Some used to say ru like Bruhaspati,

sounding like ryu, but what you say is not supported by the few experts I

have consulted on this and they seem to insist on the ri as in ritual. I had

gone to check the exact the pronunciation of the Brihaspati gayatri.

With Best Wishes,

Narasimha Rao [pvr]Thursday, September 28, 2000 10:20 AMvarahamihira Subject: [sri Guru] Re: Surya-Aditya MantraPranaam Sanjay,[Please excuse me for any perceived rudeness or arrogance inthis mail. I know only one way of saying things.]Yes, I am talking about the same "ri" that is in Brihaspati,Nrisimha, Krishna, Pitri, Rishi, Vrishabham etc.The "experts" you consulted are clearly wrong. Irrespectiveof how learned they are, they obviously don't have any cluein this particular issue. If it is prounounced with anexplicit consonant ® and an vowel, how is "ri" an vowel? If you pronounce i (as in "it") and immediately pronounce a(as in "that") without any gap, you get the sound "ya" (youcan try it practically. Sanskrit grammar is based onpracticality). Similarly, everyone learning Sanskrit is taughtthat saying "ri" and immediately saying "a" without any gapresults in "ra". This is NOT the case if you pronounce "ri"as in "ritual". Instead of "ra", you get "rya" then. So thispronunciation clearly violates the rules of phonology.South Indian pronunciation of "ri" as "ru" is not correcteither. By pronouncing "ru" and immediately saying "a", youget "rva".The pronunciation I described alone can be correct. If any ofthe experts you consulted are willing to debate, I can debatewith them. You can ask them just two things:(1) Why is ri+a=ra as per Yanaadesa sandhi? Why isn't it rya?(2) In "atri" (name of a rishi), first syllable is a guru(long). But in "pitri" (father), the first syllable is a laghu. If tri is pronounced the same way in both, why this difference?Sanjay, people sometimes learn rules without understandingthem. Irrespective of the stature of a person making a mistake,a mistake is a mistake. It is excellent that you consulted experts to clarify thepronunciation of Brihaspati Gayatri. It speaks volumes aboutyour sincerity. But it is sad that "experts" would mislead asincere queror like you. What they told you is not right. Itcannot be. Panini and Pingala are not fools to call ri a voweland to teach ri+a=ra. I am very comfortable with grammar andphonology. I will not call myself an expert, but that does notmatter - I am right on the money in this particular issue. You are an intelligent person. Please think about my points. If you have faith in my judgment and want help on the correctpronunciation of "Vrishabham" and "Brihaspati", I will beblessed to help you. If you have faith in those "experts"instead, let us leave it here for now. But I will appreciateif those "experts" can debate with me sometime.Your sishya,Narasimha> Jaya Jagannath> Dear Narasimha,> Ri as in Nri-Simha or in Bri-haspati. Jaya Jagannath

Dear Beatrice & Narasimha,

I accept your views with all humility and am delighted to see such experts

in SJVC. Jagannath Mahaprabhu has ensured that the best are here and I don't

have to look outside. So, Narasimha, can you record the Mantra and mail the

same as wav or mp3 file for the benefit of all?

With Best Wishes,

Sanjay Rath

Jai Jai Sri Jagannath !!!

Hare Rama Krishna !!!

Dear Narasimha,

That's wonderful. Considering your expertise in Sanskrit and the benefit of

all, may I request you to record some of the key and important mantras: (i)

may be Gayatris (Savitur, Guru, Vishnu etc., to name a few) (ii) and a few

basic mantras that you consider universally important. This request is like

asking for too much from your already tight schedule. But then, you can

take your time and do it. This could be a long-term part of our SJVC

schedule.

With warm regards,

Sarat.
