Guest guest
Hare Rama Krishna Pranaam Sanjay, > Dearest Vijay, > > Vesco episode really made me lose my head...It is neither. Narasimha has the > right answer and I hope he takes a minute off to contribute the correct > term. The correct 4th vibhakti form is: Vivasvate. So it should be " Om Vivasvate Namah " . > I hope he shall also try to put in a few lines abou the meaning of > these words so that all benefit...for example Surya is the name of one of > the sages as well. I will certainly obey your command. Here is the little that I know on this topic: All these words mean " Sun " . There are 12 forms of Sun, which symbolically stand for Sun in the 12 signs. Of these, Krishna listed the correct form to be worshipped in each direction. I will give a short description of each. You can clearly see how the description of each Sun-god correlates with the planets that have a natural rulership over different directions. All the planets came from different forms of Sun! (1) Surya: This term is from " svar " , which means a bright lustre and also means sound. Surya is the form of Sun who is very bright and always perceived by Sages and poets. He also rules over sounds. He is worshipped in the E direction ruled by Venus. (2) Ravi: This term is from the dhatu " ru " , which means to hum and to sing. Ravi is a form of Sun and he is a singer. He is worshipped in the SE direction ruled by Moon. (3) Vivasvat(n): Vivasvat means one who has vivas. Vivas means brightness, illumination and shining. Vivasvat is the seat of fire and he is very brilliant. He was the father of Vaivasvata Manu, the progenitor of human race. He wrote dharma sastras for the orderly conduct of human race and taught them to his son Manu. Manu then wrote Manu smriti. He is worshipped in the S direction ruled by Mars. (4) Bhaga: He gives material success, good fortune, love, passion and prosperity. There is a story that his eyes were destroyed by Rudra. He is another form of Sun. He is worshipped in the SW direction ruled by Rahu. (5) Varuna: He is the oldest of Gods. He possesses great wisdom and hates lies. He punishes sinners with a paasa and inflicts disease. Yama is his friend. He is the God of ocean and he is very patient. He is worshipped in the W direction ruled by Saturn. (6) Mitra: It means friend. Mitra is a form of Sun who is a friend of Varuna. He was described in Rig Veda as athe one who tells men to engage in action. He is worshipped in the NW direction ruled by Ketu. I don't know why. In other cases, I can see a clear astro-link. (7) Aditya: He is the son of Aditi, mother of Gods. He is a form of Sun responsible for heavens. When Vishnu took the avatar of Vamana, he was born to Aditi and so Aditya is also used to describe Vamana avatar. He is worshipped in the N direction ruled by Jupiter. (8) Vishnu: The dhatu " vish " means " to be present in " . And the word " Vishnu " means " one who is present in everything " (all-pervading). Mercury represents Vishnu among all planets. Vishnu is also a form of Sun and he is all-pervasive. He is worshipped in the NE direction ruled by Mercury. (9) Bhaskara: " Bhaah " means bright rays. " Kara " means one who makes. Bhaskara means one who makes bright rays. He is the form of Sun responsible for making light. He is worshipped in the vertical (or central) direction ruled by Sun. > Best Wishes > Sanjay Rath I have a couple of comments on the unfortunate Vesco episode: It is a simple case of huge culture gap. Concepts like submissveness to guru are very basic in Indian culture. But they are totally new to some westerners without a basis in Indian culture. It is easy to find fault with Vesco, but, to be fair to him, he is from a different world and may not have known what was expected from him. We should be careful when accepting a sishya into SJVC. Vesco makes a good point that there is nothing here for a complete beginner. We should do something about it. All the resources we have are for advanced students or atleast those who are ok with all the basics. We have nothing for a total beginner (except at Delhi). We should. Your sishya, Narasimha PS: I am not writing on the lists these days to concentrate on the book. But I continue to read this list (as far as the other list is concerned, I don't even read it). Even after I made it clear that my leaving for 2 months had nothing to do with the Dina-natha exchange, you looked at it as a self-punishment. I did not think I did anything worthy of a punishment or self-punishment. I faced extreme hostility, but showed resraint. I was hurt when you projected my exile as a self-punishment. However you thought I was going for a self-punishment and so I will. After the 2 months of exile (or reduced activity) during April-May, I will indeed give myself a self-punishment and stay away from this list completely for 2 months (June-July). Guest guest
Hare Rama Krishna Pranaam Sanjay, > Dear Narasimha, > I think there has been some small error in the directions. I have given > the correct ones. E is ruled by the Sun, SE by Venus, S by Mars, SW by Rahu, > W by Saturn, NW by Moon, N by Mercury, NE by Jupiter and the vertical by > Ketu. But, when Vedic ceremonies are performed and planets are invoked, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are invoked in center, SE, S, NE, N, E, W, SW and NW directions respectively. These are the natural directions of planets. Krishna's teaching mentioned by you is also consistent with this. For example, Moon is a singer (Venus is a poet). Ravi is a form of Sun who is a singer. Ravi is the form of Sun with lunar energy. Krishna taught us to worship Ravi in the SE direction. That should belong to Moon rather than Venus as you say. Aditya is the form of Sun with the energy of Jupiter or Vamana. Krishna tells us to worship him in north. So north is Jupiter's. Vishnu is the form of Sun with the energy of Mercury. He is worshipped in NE and so that direction is Mercury's. Vivasvat is the form of Sun with the energy of Mars. He is worshipped in S and so that belongs to Mars. And so on. I think the directions given by Krishna for different forms of Sun - i.e. energies of different planets in Sun - are consistent with the natural directions of planets as used in Vedic ceremonies and not as you listed above. > That is a brilliant exposition of the names of the Sun. Thank you. > I hope all this can > be consolidated and put in the new issue of the Jyotish News by Sarat. > Best Wishes > Sanjay Rath Your sishya, Narasimha
