Dear PVR ji,

Namaste.

I am attaching sthira karaka chapter from “Jaimini Sutramirtham†by Sri

Iranganti Rangacharya. As we are discussing whether Rahu can be taken as AK or

not, I thought this chapter would throw us more light or stir our thoughts. Can

you please go through the attached chapter (if you have not read the book

before) and provide us your comments? We all will be extremely grateful if a

Sanskrit scholar like you has a look at this chapter and provide comments?

Dear Shanmukha,

I might be making a mistake here by posting a chapter from your Guru ji’s book

with out seeking prior permission. Kindly excuse me for this. I could not resist

posting it here.

Regards,

nagarjuna

Though it was very tough given the quality of scanning the difficult

hand-writing, I attempted to read the sections in Venkatesha Vyakhya related to

chara karaka calculation. I do not find any statements that Rahu cannot be

Atmakaraka. On the contrary, he seems to suggest the possibility of Rahu being

aatma kaaraka.

The sutra of Jaimini is: " aatmaadhikaH kalaadibhiH nabhogaH saptaanaaM

aShTamaanaaM vaa " (aatmaa is the higher planet by kalas, among seven or eight).

Venkatesha expands this in his commentary as " ravyaadiinaaM shanyantaanaaM

saptaanaaM raahvantaanaaM aShTaanaaM vaa madhye yo nabhogo grahaH " (among the

seven planets starting from Sun and ending with Saturn or the eight planets

ending with Rahu, whichever planet that moves in the sky). If Rahu is not

allowed to be AK, there is no need to specifically mention " eight planets ending

with Rahu " in the commentary on the sutra dealing with the calculation of AK.

Thus, whoever interpreted Venkatesha vyakhya to you has misunderstood and jumped

to conclusions.

Some scholars may have interpreted the word " nabhoga " that is used in the

commentary as a qualifier to the word " graha " (planet) to imply a physical

planet and hence ruled out Rahu. However, nabhoga only means " one who moves in

the sky " and could indicate Rahu too. It does not exclude mathematical points

(or celestial beings representing mathematical points) that move in the sky.

The way I read it, Jaimini used " nabhoga " to mean a planet and Venkatesha caused

confusion by using both the words nabhoga and graha. The word nabhoga itself can

mean planet and there is no need to use both the words nabhoga and graha. Some

scholars may be tempted to read between the lines from this double expression,

but one should not miss the obvious reference to " eight planets ending with

Rahu " .

I absolutely do not see Venkatesha endorsing the view that Rahu cannot be aatma

kaaraka.

If there isn't ANY intention to " blame " , then why even mention this?

Different people pursue different priorities. It is wrong to expect specific

things from people and be disappointed.

A very noble way to put it! Yes, what we do, write and spread is not just for

others, but for our own sake too. It expands our safety net if we were to come

back!
