sohamsa [sohamsa ] On Behalf Of Narasimha P.V.R. RaoFriday, November 18, 2005 6:40 AMvedic astrology ; sohamsa ; Varahamihira Group; Subject: Sri Satyadevashtakam (new prayer)

Namaste learned friends,

Tuesday's Karthika Pournima was the 64th Full Moon since we started our monthly Satya Narayana vratam.

On this auspicious occasion, I composed a small prayer consisting of eight Sanskrita verses for Lord Satya Deva (the god of Truth). I called it "Sri Satyadevashtakam".

I am also enclosing the prayer in PDF format with the mail. But those who read this mail on may not have access to it as removes attachments. In that case, you can read the prayer at the following location in Devanagari script or in Roman script. I have also given the meanings of the verses at the end, in English language, for the benefit of those who like to understand the meanings of the prayers they read.

You do NOT need any fonts to view this. As this is a PDF file, all the fonts are embedded in it. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it, but it may already be there on your computer.

This prayer has no special power in it, as it is composed by a normal person like me. However, it is a sincere praise of the qualities of the Lord and it makes some good wishes. Especially, if some blessed souls read it in the coming years, it will gradually gain a power of its own. That is the idea behind sharing it with all. Please feel free to read it on Full Moon nights or on other auspicious occasions. Please feel free to share it with others who may be interested.

I apologize for the non-astrological mail on astrology lists.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

Dear Sanjay,

> Just for my sanskrit curiosity, Can you please tell me chandas,> I counted 14 Akshaara in each quarter, giving 56 aksharaa in each stanza.> The remainder by 12 is 8 and also 8 are the total stanzas. Please> tell me the specific significance you may have thought about on this.

It is not just 14 letters per pada, but they are supposed to be a specific guru-laghu (long-short) pattern. That's what makes it sound nice. You will see the pattern "ta-bha-ja-ga-ga". In other words, each line sounds like "UUI UII IUI IUI UU", where "U" is a long sound (guru) and "I" is a short sound (laghu).

In terms of sound, think of "lAlAla lAlala lalAla lalAla lA lA", where "A" is the long vowel and "a" is the short vowel.

The metres and composing in them became a part of my common sense when I was a kid and I compose in metres without much conscious effort and analysis. Thus, the practical application has become of a part of my common sense and got internalized, but I don't clearly remember theoretical details like the names of the metres. I THINK this vrittam is called "Vasanta Tilakam" (Spring's mark), but not too sure.

While the eight verses are in this rigid metre, the phalasruti (last verse giving the result) is in the flexible Anushtup metre. Instead of saying "nashyanti" as phalasrutis tend to do normally, I said "nasyantu" and left it as a wish rather than an assertion!

Yes, Venkateswara Suprabhatam (tag line: "Sri Venkatesa Dayite tava suprabhAtam") is in the same metre. That is why it sounds similar. Also, Subrahmanyashtakam ("Vallee sanAtha mama dehi karAvalambam") and Nrisimha Karavalamba Stotram by Sankaracharya ("Lakshmi Nrisimha mama dehi karAvalambam") are in the same metre. Even the "Navagraha karAvalamba stotram" I wrote 10 years ago (up on my website) is in the same metre. This is one of the handful of metres I love to compose in.

"Sardoola vikreeditam" (lion/tiger's play) is another favorite metre of mine. The small verse I composed on Dakshinamurthy at Saylorsburg in May was in this metre. Even the prayer verse on Krishna at the beginning of my first book was composed in this metre. It uses the formula "ma-sa-ja-sa-ta-ta-ga" and each of the four lines reads as "lAlAlA lalalA lalAla lalalA lAlAla lAlAla lA".

> Also the last time I attended Satyanaarayana vrata at your home you> had composed another Shloka. It was when Swami SadaSivom was there. It> was sounding like the "Venkatesha Suprabatam" chandas?. Can you please> share that one too.

That was the same thing, except that I had only 5 verses then. Siddhanatha Guru, who came here with Swamiji, suggested that I should add 3 more verses and call it an "Ashtakam". I followed the suggestion and added 3 verses for this Pournima. This the final version and the fuller one.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

Om Gurave Namah Namaste Narasimha garu, That's a wonderful "ashtakam" in praise of Satya Narayana and reflects your genuine attachment to Truth. We look forward to many more gems from you. However, I have a small doubt. In the first story of Satyanarayana vrata katha, the Lord is described as "tatra Narayanam devam shukla varnam chaturbhujam...sankha chakra gadaapadma vanamaalaa vibhooshitam"There is no mention of Him as wearing white clothes. The Lord Himself was fair/white in colour. Or have I missed the link to white clothes somewhere? I request you to clarify this doubt, because your reply would help me in visualizing Him correctly, because I also perform Satyanarayana vratam on every Pournami...have been doing so for the past 26 years. I will definitely recite your ashtakam from now onwards. Regards, Lakshmi "Narasimha P.V.R. Rao" <pvr

Shri Narasimhaji, Thank you a lot for such a wonderful gift. I did see the Stotra in Roman script, but could not locate it in Devanagari script. How to find it? With regards, Vinay "Narasimha P.V.R.
