Dear Narasimha,

Namaste. Jaya Jagannath!

Thank you for your reply about varas. Can you please also help regarding when does a month start (is this just a lunar month starting from pratipad?) and when does a year start? - so that we can determine the lord of a month and the lord of a year?

regards,Yasomatinandana das

No, the years and months that are aligned with horas

are neither solar nor lunar. A solar month starts after

every 30 degree motion of Sun. It starts when Sun enters

a rasi. A lunar month starts whenever Sun and Moon conjoin.

These two astronomical phenomena can occur at anytime. They

are not synchronized with sunrise (or 6 am LMT).

The months and years used in the definition of the lord of

the month and the lord of the year (in shadbalas) are

different. The Savana year is used here.

A new day (weekday) starts with sunrise (or 6 am LMT). A

month consists of 30 such days. A year consists of 360 such

days. Just as a weekday is ruled by the lord of the first

hora, a month and year are also ruled by the lord of the

first hora.

One will immediately note that for the correct counting of

months and years, we need the correct starting point. We

are supposed to count from the day of Creation. The

knowledge of this is passed from one generation to another

and one may refer to Dr. Raman's book on " Graha and Bhava

Balas " for more information.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha
