Dear Venkatesh,

> What are all the five offerings to Lord Shiva to appease pancha tatwas?

There are so many answers to this question based on what you are trying to accomplish.

Based on your questions, I am guessing that, like most of us, you also don't

have much exposure to the karma kanda. Performing rudrabhisheka will confer great benefits,

but you will need to learn the procedure from a qualified teacher. Until you are able to do so,

you can perform a simple panchopachara puja to Lord Shiva:

1) shivaaya namah. gandham samarpayaami. - pritivi tattwa. offer sandalwood paste.

2) shivaaya namah. pushpaih puujayaami. - akasha tattwa. offer flowers.

3) shivaaya namah. dhuupam aaghraapayaami. - vayu tattwa. offer incense.

4) shivaaya namah. diipam darshayaami. - agni tattwa. offer a lamp (aarti).

5) shivaaya namah. naivedyam nivedayaami. - jala tattwa. offer some naivedyam like rice.

As a part of (just before) step 2, where you are offering flowers, pray to the five faces of shiva,

which once again represents the 5 tattwas:

1) tatpurushaaya namah. ( puurva-mukhaaya namah ). - prithivi tattwa

2) aghoraaya namah. ( dakshiNa-mukhaaya namah ). - agni tattwa

3) sadyojaataya namah. ( pashcima-mukhaaya namah ). - prithivi tattwa

4) vaamadevaaya namah. ( uttara-mukhaaya namah ). - jala tattwa

5) iishaanaaya namah. ( uurdhva-mukhaaya namah. ) - akasha tattwa

This should be simple to do. As you learn more, you can easily make it more elaborate, by adding

abhisheka, or pancha kalasha puja, or japa etc. These will have to be learnt from a qualified teacher.

Shri Brahmadaru Smarami

Dear Venkatesh,

The five offerings that I wrote about correspond with the second set of mantras in correspondence with the five heads of Shiva given by Ajit below. The first set for the pancha tatvas is not exclusive to Shiva but applies to all the deities.

Best Regards,

Dear Sarbani

and Ajit, Namaskar

Ajits list

of the pancha mukha has a reoccurence of Prithvi tattva. Please correct this

for us. Maybe this could be a nice addition to the Jyotish Digest?

Could you

please specify the five offerings for the five heads of shiva? Which head gets

milk for example?

Best

wishes,

Dear Visti and Sarbani,

See http://www.mudgala.com/articles/panchayatana.html

Thanks for catching the typo. Tatpurusha

corresponds to vayu tattwa. I have never seen the

pancha-mukhas worshipped with specific

dravyas, and am not aware of the mapping. I am hoping

that Sarbani can clarify. As far as I

know, the pancha-mukha worship occurs in two places: in the

ravanokta mahanyasa as a mental puja, and

in the pancha-kalasha shiva puja where water is offered.

Of course, my knowledge is quite limited.

Shri Brahmadaru Smarami

Dear Ajit and Visti,

Actually I was taught this pancha mukha puja with specific dravyas by the sannyasins of Sri Sarada Math (Ramakrishna order) for worship during Shiva Ratri. We did not use this method during the normal parthiva Shiva linga puja. Four dravyas were used in the four pujas during the four praharas of the night. In between each dravya Shiva is bathed with water with the mantra Om Namo Pashupataye Namah. Now as there are only four praharas in the night, the fifth one is missing: Tatpurusha. Ajit, any light on this?

Milk: Om Haum Ishanaya Namah

Curd: Om Haum Aghoraya Namah

Ghee: Om Haum Vamadevaya Namah

Honey: Om Haum Sadyojataya Namah

Best Regards,

Sarbani
