Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear RD, Namaste Thank you for your advice. My piano teacher was dead set against my playing the guitar and I regret never taking it up seriously. She also had it in her agenda to make me an opera singer L. The lute sounds more inviting that the flute which I used to do. But please don’t tell me I have to trade in my rolex for the Hiren Roy 149! But will definitely make a trip out to choose my sitar. So for now, the sitar is the most alluring………the chanting of the Isopanisad is still ringing in my ears With the sitar in the background. Love, Swee Hi Swee, Partha and the others will give you real substance, I'm sure. For what it's worth, I checked out the narayana dasa of your shodasamsa, and discovered that you began running Cn-Pi from your birthday a month ago. Cn has your AK Mo in swasthana, aspected by Ve from friendly Cp, with Ra and Ke in Pi. Not a bad time for a musical instrument initiation. You need to keep your fingers nicely protected, though, since there's argala from a retrograding Sa on your 2h, but Ma there should give ya enough vim to manage it. If I were you, I might pick up a veena, Saraswati's favored instrument (Mo and Ve are fem), and its cadence can be as captivating as the sitar's, though the latter is better for jazz fusion stuff. Should you be interested in a veena, Karnataka has great luthiers and the best species of pumpkin. The best sitars originate in West Bengal, and Hiren Roy makes the 149 variety, and is apt for you J Should you need advice on online buying options, do let me know, though musical instruments are best checked out firsthand. You'll get a lot of sitars for a Rolex trade-in J A Hiren Roy sitar can get as pricey as USD 1800 but then you can certainly start off with one that's in the USD 250 tag or thereabouts. And no, I don't think prior experience on a guitar would've placed you any ahead on the sitar learning curve; in fact, if my very brief veena venture is anything to go by, knowing the guitar is actually a minus. You'll save yourself the time to grow the much-needed calluses, but that's about it J Sikhi Ram makes good sitars too, incidentally, and there are luthiers in Lucknow and Kanpur who are as good as any, if with no tags to flaunt. If you get serious with all this and need help, let me know. My commission won't be very unreasonable J Oh, one thing more – sitar strings can be a real pain, especially if in a country like Zed; no Elixir string equivalents for sitars, and the quality of Indian strings isn't exactly great L Hope this helps, Ramapriya ayirpamar Love, Swee On Behalf Of Ramapriya DFriday, May 13, 2005 7:29 AM Subject: Re: [Jaya Jagannatha] Elementary doubts...
