Question: What is the meaning of the word Raja Yoga? Explain with examples.

 

Raja yoga is kingly combination or the best combination of planets. Best in giving good results to the native. Good in the material world is power, status and wealth. So this combination is the combination of the lords of the power houses and wealth giving houses, namely Vishnu Sthanas and Lakshmi Sthanas. (Lords of kendras and trines).If these lords combine and if the planets are in strength in rasi and navamsa the promise of the raja yoga might fructify in the dasa and antar of the participating planets.

 

Planets combine in three ways to produce raja yoga.

a.Lord of a kendra and a lord of a trine conjoin in a house

b.both lords mutually aspecting each other

c.both lords occupying each others house

 

Parashara says that combination of 5th lord and 9thlord with 4th and 10th lord gives royal status or high government position.

 

According to Jaimini maharshi, combinations of Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, putrakaraka, darakaraka and 5th lord results in raja yoga. Atmakaraka embodies the significations of the 1st house. Amatyakaraka embodies the significations of the 2nd house. Putra karaka embodies the significations of 5th house and Darakaraka signifies the 7th house.

 

There are also some other planetary combinations involving benefic planets which give raja yoga. Moon and Venus conjunction or Moon aspected by venus gives raja yoga.

 

Then there is another kind of raja yoga called Vipareeta Rajayoga. They involve Dusthans (3rd,6th,8th and 12th ) . Lords of the dusthanas conjoin or exchange signs and being evil lords they damage each other whereby benefitting the native, giving power/wealth by the downfallor demise of another person. This power/wealth given by the Vipareetha raja yoga does not last long.
