Sometime back, I tried a lot of sodya pinda based timing formulas given in Dr. Raman's Ashtakavarga book. The last one tried remained in the program. I should've removed it then itself. I *think* it currently gives the rasi and nakshatra corresponding to the product of a planet's sodya pinda and the bindus in the 11th from it, representing gains in the matters shown by the planet. We take the product of the two, divide it by 12 or 27 and take the remainder to get the corresponding rasi or nakshatra. These are used in transits. This is just a research topic and there are no infallible methods based on this. This is just research. So, you can just ignore it. I have another question, this time regarding JHL and the calculation of upagrahas. For example, lets take the following chart: Date of Birth: January 26, 1980 Time of Birth: 1:00:00 pm Time Zone of Birth: 3:00 East of GMT Longitude of Birth: 47 E 59 Latitude of Birth: 29 N 20 Vara (weekday): Saturday Sunrise = 6:42 am (Apparent rise - upper limb) Kaala 3 Pi 40 U.Bhaa. 1 - Mrityu 27 Ar 29 Krittika 1 - ArthaPr 19 Ta 19 Rohini 3 - YamaGha 8 Ge 26 Aardra 1 - Gulika 10 Cp 55 Sravanam 1 - I am not able to get the results above. Could you please tell me where I am going wrong? Sunrise: 6:42 Sunset : 17:22 Day Len: 10:40 Day Len/8 : 1:20 On a Saturday, during the day the 5 upagrahas rise at the beggining of the appropriate portions: Upagraha Part Rise Time my result pos from JHL JHL rise time --\ - Kaala 2 6:42 + 1:20 = 8:02 5 Aq 45 3 Pi 40 6:42 + 2:40 = 9:22 Mrityu 4 6:42 + 4:00 = 10:42 2 Ar 13 27 Ar 29 6:42 + 5:20 = 12:02 ArthaPr 5 6:42 + 5:20 = 12:02 27 Ar 44 19 Ta 19 6:42 + 6:40 = 13:22 YamaGha 6 6:42 + 6:40 = 13:22 19 Ta 35 8 Ge 26 6:42 + 8:00 = 14:42 Gulika 1 6:42 10 Cp 55 10 Cp 55 6:42 The position of Gulika is the same, but the others differ by 1 hour and 20 minutes in the position of the ascendant. Assuming the position of Gulika is correct, and since Kaala rises at the beginning of the next portion, should it not rise 1:20 later? ( the upagrahas are all set up to rise at the beginning of the planets portion in the preferences ). your sishya, ajit -- Ajit Krishnan ajit@(julian|engga).uwo.ca http://publish.uwo.ca/~akrishna gpg key 794AE458

( the > upagrahas are all set up to rise at the beginning of the planets > portion > in the preferences ). Gulika rises at the beginning of Saturn's portion, i.e. at sunrise on a Saturday. The portion after Saturn's is lordless. The next portion belongs to Sun. That is why Kaala rises 2:40 after Gulika. Remember that we have 8 portions and only 7 planets. The portion after Saturn's is lordless. You forgot that portion. Some people take Gulika to rise in the lordless part, but that is wrong. BTW, instead of trying upagrahas at the beginning of respective portions, try them at the middle (only Gulika at the beginning).
