There are usually offerings of five aspects said to represent the pa~nca tattva, including water, lamp, incense etc. Abhishek is usually done with five items of milk, water, amras, ghee and dadhi and pastes of sandalwood, turmeric etc are pasted on but most pastes are dependant on which remedial aspect of the Supreme you are trying to pacify, since trees, shrubs etc., are said to originate from the Supreme according to Vamana and Skanda Puranas.
