Hi All,

BPHS says:

raktashyamo divaadhIsho.... for Sun.

what is raktashyama? rakta is blood...which is supposed to be red - but what would be shyama added to that - black?

or does raktashyama mean blood-like?

for Simha rasi, it says: paanduH ... which is pale / pale-white, i guess.

Sharat, the 2 colors you ask are for Sun and Leo (red etc. and pale white, respectively).

Best Regards,

SS

Om Namo Bhagavate ParamguraveDear SS & SharatNamasteWe often find what we percieve as conflicting meanings/references from different texts on the same topic.  I just quoted the one reference from Narad Purana as an alternative to proposed by Parashara.  It is for this reason we need Guru and Parampara to guide us in reconciling all these subtle differences.  My only assumption is that the various colours for Surya as we have discovered are to used for different applications.  Lets wait for some more clarity from the Seniors.

हरे राम कृष्ण

Dear Bipin and Sharat, Namaskar.

As per Parashara Sun is Dark-Red complexion and its sign is

off-white or khakis. The same is taught in the tradition, naturally.

Other colours maybe associated with the grahas for different purposes,

i.e. when we speak of complexions the reference to Dark-red is given.

So Bipin, do give us the sloka from Narada Purana and the context

wherein its given? Normally copper metal is associated with Sun and

Mars also.

Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

Om Namo Bhagavate ParamguraveDear VistiNamasteThanks for clarifying the parampara understanding on this. Chapter 55 is entitled 'Delineation of Horoscopy' and the context is that this part of the chapter expands on the basics of Jyotish including descriptions of planets, signs etc - please see file attached

Verses 12-13 - english translation (Motilal version)

'The Houses immediately following the Kendras are termed Panaphara; and those following the latter, Apoklima.  The colours of the 12 Rasis beginning with Aries are in order....1) Red, 2) White, 3) Green, 4) Pink, 5) Brown, 6) Grey, 7) Variegated, 8) Black, 9) Yellow, 10) Saffron, 11) Deep Brown, 12) Bright "

Im not sure if the Chapter title could refer to Prasna - I doubt it but could be wrong.  Sweeji has cautioned that there are some errors in Motilal edition - not sure if there are any here. Having said this ive managed to find the sanskrit version (links below) in case you would like to verify the sanskrit and advise us.

Best wishesBipinhttp://is1.mum.edu/vedicreserve/puranas/narada_purana_purva.pdf

Om Namo Bhagavate ParamguraveDear SSNamasteThanks for your input.  The discussion evolved from Planets into Signs, so both is being discussed as there are inconsistencies.  May I rephrase and ask for guidance on how to use each reference in their respective contexts..

Dear Bipin,

I did understand your question was regarding variations between different texts.

I believe your reference pertains to the sloka 16 of Chap. 55 of Narada Purana you've given a link below to, pertaining to the colors attributed to the planets:

taamra-shukl-rakta-hari.....taamra obviously meaning copper.

what is raktashyama? rakta is blood...which is

be red - but what would be shyama added to that - bla ck?

or does raktashyama mean blood-like?

for Simha rasi, it says: paanduH ...

Sharat, the 2 colors you ask are for Sun and Leo

Om Namo Bhagavate ParamguraveDear VistiNamasteI was trying to reconcile Coppery Red per MW definition you cited to Maroon,  as my problem was visualising these two colours as the same.

I will try and search for pic per MW (4th of the 7 membranes with which an embryo is covered)  A great idea for anyone publishing future books is to show a colour palette for the various planets and signs.

Thanks for your time in following this upBest WishesBipin.2009/3/14 Visti Larsen <visti

Dear Bipin, Namaskar.

Did you read what I cited from the dictionary? How different do you see

that dark-red and copper-red are from each other?

Dear Visti and SS

Namaste

We have now established that according to parampara the actual

colour for Sun is Maroon (alternatively = Dark Red)

My question still remains... under what circumstances do we use

copper as colour for Sun.  Incidentally, ive read that copper is often

used as a remedy for Vastu dosha for East direction, but im not sure if

this is exclusively for Vastu.

I agree, brushing up on some sanskrit is definately on the todo

list.

Dear Bipin, Namaskar.

Thanks for the reference. Always double check the sanskrit - I always

do and then you learn much more.

Heres the Sanskrit sloka which SS found:

Indeed the word: taamra has been used to describe the Suns colour or

Varna.

Hereunder I have copied the output from the MW dictionary for the word

taamra, which I believe should satisfy our doubt:

Thanks for clarifying the parampara understanding on this.

Chapter 55 is entitled 'Delineation of Horoscopy' and the

context is that this part of the chapter expands on the basics of

Jyotish including descriptions of planets, signs etc - please see file

attached

Verses

12-13 -

english translation (Motilal version)

'The

Houses

immediately following the Kendras are termed Panaphara; and those

following the latter, Apoklima.  The colours of the 12 Rasis beginning

Im not sure if the Chapter title could refer to Prasna - I

doubt

it but could be wrong.  Sweeji has cautioned that there are some errors

in Motilal edition - not sure if there are any here. Having said this

ive managed to find the sanskrit version (links below) in case you

Dear Bipin and Sharat, Namaskar.

As per Parashara Sun is Dark-Red complexion and its sign is

off-white or khakis. The same is taught in the tradition, naturally.

Other colours maybe associated with the grahas for different purposes,

i.e. when we speak of complexions the reference to Dark-red is given.

So Bipin, do give us the sloka from Narada Purana and the context

wherein its given? Normally copper metal is associated with Sun and

Mars also.

Om Namo Bhagavate ParamguraveDear SSNamasteYou may be onto something, so please do share your ramblings.  Your analogy can be practically linked to the daylight hours of the Sun.  We often apply the various energies of the Sun to Vastu where the maximum morning light has to enter the home by keeping the East Sector open.  The ultraviolet rays at Sunrise are more benefical than the harmful infrared rays of Sunset.  Would it be too far-fetched to link Coppery Red to Sunrise and Dark Red to Sunset.  Could someone please correct me linking 1st half of rasi to sunrise and second half of rasi to sunset as I may be completely off the track here.  I know that we can divide all the signs into night and day.

BTW, I had said Orange-Red, but Maroon threw me completely off because of blue that needs to be added to get this colour, heading me into another direction.  Incidentally, according to Wikipedia, Maroon is described as Dark Brownish Red.  This is now as clear as mud.

Best Wishes

Bipin  2009/3/14 Soul Sadhak <soulsadhak

may be: when Sun is in

first half of rasi - tamra - copper

second half of rasi - aruna - red

as in ..... namas tamraya cha arunaya cha...

ok, dismiss this if you dont like it.

someone said orange-red for Sun. Doesnt copper give reddish-orangish-brownish tinge - all at the same time?
