Guest guest Posted October 5, 2009 Report Share Posted October 5, 2009 Hi, In Navagriha stotra , it is clearly spelt that Shani is Yamagraja ( elder brother ) In terms of Vahana, they have different vahanas too ( buffallo for Yama and Gridhra - Vulture for Shani ). Both of them are related to Kubera too. Here , more than literal meaning, there is something hidden.. Shani is the ruler who sees that the righteousness prevails in this world.. While Yama is a Dharma swarupa himself, who sets what is right and what is not.. Both are related to Kubera, which I believe, indicates the prosperity when somebody follows Dharma.. Interestingly, Mars is also known as Dharmaraja or Dharmatmaja, with the first name as Bhumiputra.
