Guest guest
Shri Raj ji, Jai Shri Ram! I have been to Jaipur but did not get time to see Jantar Mantar there! There is also a Jantar Mantar at Delhi which I have visited several times. An observatory at Ujjain and a similar one at Kanya Kumari also are very interesting! There is also an observatory at Nainital in Uttarakhand. What maybe surprising to most of the members is that all these observatories including the Jantar Mantar at Delhi give the so called Sayana longitudes of the sun i.e. the sun enters Makar Rashi (Makar Sankranti) on the day of Winter Solstice and so on. I also learn that the same is the case with Jaipur Janar Mantar Rashivalaya. Equatorial coordinates are used for finding the declination of the sun This proves without doubt that till a few centuries back, we were going by so called Sayana sankrrantis not only for festivals but even jyotisha! I had purchased a book in Hindi published by Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan, Delhi, about the observatories in India, but it leaves much to be desired. I do not recall having seen/read any other books about Jantar Mantar etc. There is, however, a lot of information available on the web esp at http://www.jantarmantar.org/ and http://www.jantarmantar.org/Architecture_Science_web.pdf and it is quite informative. The former presents a magnificient 3D view of the whole of Jantar Mantar of Jaipur. I am sure you known about it already. Guest guest
I have read that Sawai Jai Singh II had performed many vedic yagyas like the Ashwamedha. It is unlikely that he would not be aware of the precession of planets and the adjustment of ayanamsha. However, he deliberately chose to use the sayana rashis in all the Jantar Mantars - including Jaipur one which was the last one he built after several models. These were built in the year 1735. I am curious to know, how could he have missed the extant literature on astrology that clearly mention precession of planets and ayanamsha. regards, raj , " Krishen " <jyotirved wrote: > > Shri Raj ji, > Jai Shri Ram! > I have been to Jaipur but did not get time to see Jantar Mantar there! > There is also a Jantar Mantar at Delhi which I have visited several times. Guest guest
Raj_ji, Did all those Royals that historically built Temples (financed mostly, truth be told!) were experts in religion or in touch with God? And I do not mean in the Indian Stream of culture but others too! After all NOBEL created the NOBEL PRIZE to make amends for his mistakes and mistaken early goals, did he not? The one whose earlier contribution was Dynamite or TNT or some explosive that terrorists and militant types have been running rampant with, for more than many decades? Nobel Prize was a sort of penance, I suppose for 'Alfie', but does that make him a Messiha of PEACE? Or something similar? Anyone read a good astrological book by Sawai Mansingh, lately? Or ever??
