Dear Rajji,

You have seen that according to the puranas the Mahashivaratri is

linked to the month of Magha and that is according to the Sidereal

calendar. The Puranas did not link Mahashivaratri with the seasonal

months.

Dear Sir,

Thanks. As you know, I am struggling to put together the astronomical, cultural

and religious basis for celebrating each festival. Shivratri Vrata is on the top

of my list.

I looked up several translations of the Shiv Purana (consisting of 24000

shlokas), but could not find any reference to the date when Shivratri Vrata is

to be celebrated (although the Vrata is mentioned - and there are other

Astronomical details like the definition of Lokas, Manvantaras etc.)

Could you please help me point out? As you know, the Shiv Purana has six parts,

if you just point me to the right section, I will look up the relevant sanskrit

text.

Dear Rajji,

There are monthly shivaratris every month and there is the Mahashivaratri once

in a year. You will find all these details in the Skanda purana.

Dear Sir,

Thank you. Looks like this is a long-term project! How do I go through 21

volumes of Skanda Purana to locate a few lines on the Shivratri Vrata. Help!

Dear Rajji,

Sorry for being too miserly  with the information. Please have a look at the

Brahmottara Khanda. I cannot quote the verses right now. Shortly I shall be back

in India. If you do not get it by that time I should be able to send it to you.

May be some other member will be able to give you the verses before that.

Regards,

Sunil K. Bhattacharjya
